Is anyone else concerned about groups becoming echo chambers?

Just wondering.

2. Based on the pattern of Old DU, I'd say the chances in most groups are approximately...

....302,467,224 to one against. But that's just a rough approximation.

The chance that groups will become venues for stale, tedious rehashes of ongoing arguments where no one from either side will ever change their mind without repeated severe EST, on the other hand, worries me, but I don't see any way of avoiding it.

wearily,
Bright

4. No, but the host feature looks ripe for abuse.

5. I worry about that too.

Sometimes people misunderstand the post or the rules. The nice thing about old DU is it allowed multiple people to look at the post and come to "consensus." Also, the admins are the ultimate arbiter. If there are issues, they are still responsible for dealing with them.

9. Exactly.

Now, it's just one person arbitrarily deciding who gets to stay and participate in that forum. Don't like it one bit.

12. Not just one person.

As I understand it, the Admins will start each group with more than one and existing hosts can make new hosts.

13. It will still be that one person making the decision

different from the group of mods working on consensus. It mostly concerns me for the more controversial forums.

We should call them bishops.

What, being a host and all.

ETA: Now you can transubstantiate, too.

The host feature.

8. it should be very clear in most cases if a host is abusing his or her authority:

the locking message by the host identifies the locker, states that the thread is locked for violating the group purpose, and contains the stated group purpose

the host authority doesn't extend to moderating the thread, which will be done by juries

if i understand correctly, jurors can't post while adjudicating a post

6. Admins are proposing a multi-layered system where different groups enforce various standards:

the jury system will adjudicate some rules violations in posts; group and forum hosts will lock off-topic threads; and another team will ban trolls and disruptive posters from the website

this separates the powers available

I will now speak hypothetically --

(1) for example, an R/T host could justifiably lock this thread as not meeting the purpose of this group

Discuss religious and theological issues. All relevant topics are permitted. Believers, non-believers, and everyone in-between are welcome

(2) but the ability to hide your post as (say) a vile attack on the goodwill and decency of DUers would reside with a random jury

(3) whereas the power to tombstone you on the grounds that your post was rightwing propaganda would lie with a third team

the above is, as i said, purely hypothetical: although your post may be lockable as not meeting the purpose of this group, it is obviously not a vile attack on the goodwill and decency of DUers, and it is obviously neither rightwing propaganda nor a tombstone-worthy gaffe

sorry had to be done.. echo-ing your post title and what not..

but nah, i think for the most part progressives are free thinkers who have a wide variety of views and don't just follow the crowd.

11. I hope you're right.

One thing that gives me pause is the seemingly limitless capacity for anonymous Internet posters to be petty.

16. I think the stale echo chambers will be the exclusive groups

- Agnostics/Atheists only and True Believers only. But this forum will probably get see a lot of action...IMHO.
