Shining Star winner helps find a home for the homeless

A Tigard woman who has dedicated herself to helping the homeless has been named volunteer of the year by the Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce.

The “From the heart” award, named for longtime community volunteer Jim Hartman, honors people who dedicate themselves to a cause in the Tigard community.

Herron is chairwoman of the severe weather shelter at St. Anthony Catholic Church, which provides a warm meal and place to sleep for homeless adults when the weather turns bad.

Although it doesn't make the news very often, this kind of service occurs on an everyday basis at hundreds, maybe thousands, of churches around the country. This is addition to direct financial support through SVP and other dioceses-operated programs. It is a side of the Church that many are unaware of.

the government should be providing.
