Firefly Universe Online - Update - This is a hoax :(

Last edited Sun Jan 6, 2013, 01:28 PM - Edit history (1)

Looking over at Bluesnews today and I see this one line item:

"The Firefly Universe Online Facebook Page has word that this MMOG based on the cult sci-fi series has resumed development with the blessings of Fox Entertainment. They say to expect a Kickstarter campaign to support the project. Thanks Massively."

http://www.bluesnews.com/s/137902/firefly-universe-online

It also has a link to this page:

https://www.facebook.com/FireflyUniverseOnline

WTF? I have no idea who is doing the design, programming or this up-coming kickstarter but... I want to know more...

Yes please... I want to be a browncoat and have my own ship and crew

Edit: The above is my original post, I've change the title to have include Jeff47's news (see post #6) that this is a hoax.

1. This reminds me of attempts to make a Culture MMO.

Iain Banks even gave his blessing to do it.

(Iain Banks is an author of a series of novels oriented around The Culture and this really fantastic universe in which transhumans control the galaxy for the most part.)

Sadly, having been involved in game development, I think this will just continue the heartbreak that Firefly fans have constantly have had to deal with.

2. If we are going to make a Whedonverse MMO give me Buffy or Angel over Firefly.

I haven't watched Firefly yet, but there is no way it can top Buffy The Vampire Slayer on my list. It is by far my favorite TV show ever.

3. It would be interesting to have an MMO on Buffy...

But space cowboy rebels that harbor fugitives and insults people in Chinese...I'd be interested in how they pull that off.

8. Good point, but...

I was always more of a Willow fan than a Buffy fan.

4. I suspect it will fall flat

It is hard as heck to make any game that will appeal to a cult following. I am a huge firefly fan btw, likely it will soak up money then fold.

Now to do it right, bring back the game mechanics of freelancer...well...then..does it really matter?

black prophecy came close, almost had it...but then *pbhrbbt* (was still one of the best betas of a game that never happened, it was my privilege to play!)

7. ahhh... That explains some things...

I spent about two hours last night trying to figure out 'who' was going to be doing this. The name of a company was out there but not a single name attached to it.

A shame though... In the right hands something really awesome could be created.

Thanks for the heads up
