(78,249 posts)For you casual baseball fans, the backwards K means "caught him looking". I learned that from Republican Stepdad, who eats, sleeps, breathes and bleeds Yankee pinstripes.

There have been 23 PERFECT Games in MLB history
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_perfect_games
There have been only 4 20 Strikeout Games (per 9 innings) in MLB History - and Scherzer is the 4th!!!

I heard Buster Olney talking about it this morning and I can't believe there have been so few games of 20 strikeouts by a single pitcher.

(20,365 posts)Had one 19 K game and one 18 K game in 9 innings. And he had three more 19 K games in extra innings. All of these were when he was with the California Angels.
Nobody is better than the Strikeout King.

(16,113 posts)He threw 20 K's in the first 9 innings. He only pitched 9 innings, so he had the same number of opportunities as any of the other pitchers. The only difference between Johnson and the others was that his game was tied after 9 innings, which really has nothing to do with striking out 20 in a game.

(16,113 posts)Oddly, if he had given up a HR in the 9th and lost the game, he'd be considered a 20 K pitcher. His performance is diminished because he didn't give up that HR.
