Not many NFL coaches will speak out about social issues, but New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton didn't hold back his thoughts about guns after Will Smith's death.
Smith, a former New Orleans Saints defensive end and captain, was shot and killed Saturday night in an alleged road rage incident. In an interview with USA Today's Jarrett Bell, Payton made it clear that he wants more gun control. Bell wrote that Payton is in favor of banning guns altogether.
Two hundred years from now, theyre going to look back and say, What was that madness about? Payton said. The idea that we need them to fend off intruders
people are more apt to draw them (in other situations). Thats some silly stuff were hanging onto.
Payton said "I hate guns" in the interview, and also discussed the violence problem in New Orleans, saying "Our city is broken."
Its like our big little secret, Payton said. They dont want to kill tourism. But right now, its like the Wild, Wild West here.

(20,365 posts)Err, Payton.
But it looks like there is more to this story. The shooter's lawyer said that he felt threatened. And he was the one to call police. And Smith was with the cop that killed his father.
I'm not defending him, but there is more to come out.
But no doubt, he wasn't allowed to have a gun.

(16,113 posts)Even the "gun nutters" will let this slide if they think he could turn a 5-11 team into a playoff team. He'd have a better case, though if he hadn't lead a team with playoff talent to an early tee time the last two years.
