(64,931 posts)There's a really good bar right across from the Alamo. Been there since the mid 1800's.
El Supremo grew up in that bar!!!

(68,918 posts)To the side of the Alamo is the Menger Hotel bar.
We have never seen the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt in there though, even though people say he hangs there every night.

On edit: They make a hell of a dirty martini.

(64,931 posts)I was staying 30 minutes SW of downtown when I was there, so I had to take it easy on beer consumption.

(68,918 posts)It is one of my favorite places on earth. I'd love to stay at the Menger sometime, but my son is afraid and so are so many of my friends. It's so pretty inside.

(68,918 posts)on the walls of the lobby. It was fun to check and see if the first floor restroom was haunted (it's not that I can see-lol). I enjoyed having two bathrooms in my room. Other than that, I wasn't super impressed and it really needed updating. You can get a killer deal on the St. Anthony through Hotwire though.
I've made a list comparing Hotels.com and Hotwire. That's how I've been able to stay at the Drury (which is also super sweet looking--It's the old Alamo Bank) for pennies on the dollar.

(78,249 posts)The vandalism of Super Bowl statues has continued: last night, the statue in Alamo Square, which had previously had its sign defaced to read "Superb Owl 50," was knocked on its side, with the bottom display now reading "Oops." (Tipster SFCitizen submitted the photo of it above.)
Tipster Jackie also saw the fallen statue. "I was up early to go catch a flight, and I walked by Alamo Square, and lo and behold, the Super Bowl 50 statue had been knocked over overnight. I think we've all been waiting to see when that would happen! Pretty hard to do given how heavy those things are supposed to be."
As if that wasn't enough, tipster Will G. let us know that the sign on Twin Peaks has been altered to read "Up R Bowel."

(78,249 posts)The statue has been vandalized numerous times since it was installed in mid-January, without notification to neighborhood groups or fees paid to Recreation and Parks. It was spray-painted on its first night in the park, though cleanup crews quickly wiped away the damage from its graffiti-proof surface. The statue's solar panels were also smashed, and metal was ripped off its edges.
Less easy to fix were the letters, rearranged on Wednesday to read "Superb Owl." By Friday night, the heavy statue had been knocked over and its lettering changed to "Oops," potentially spurring this latest development.
We've reached out to the Super Bowl Host Committee to find out why the statue was removed and if it will return, and will update as we learn more.
Victory is ours!
