Dodgers reportedly interview Kirk Gibson for managerial job

After nearly three decades away, Kirk Gibson could be returning to Los Angeles.

The Dodgers interviewed their former outfielder on Monday for the team's managerial opening, ESPN reported Wednesday.

It had been reported last week that the Dodgers plan to interview former Angels first baseman and outfielder Darin Erstad for the job left vacant after the team mutually agreed to part ways with manager Don Mattingly on Oct. 22 after five years.

Gibson had spent three seasons from 1988 to 1990 playing for the Dodgers, and his walk-off home run in Game 1 of 1988 World Series against the A's is remembered as one of the greatest moments in baseball history. He helped Los Angeles claim its last championship that year before signing with the Royals as a free agent the subsequent offseason.

Gibson, 58, retired after the 1995 season. He played his final three seasons in Detroit, where he had spent the first nine seasons of his major league career.

He was named manager of the Diamondbacks in 2010, earning honors of the NL's top manager in 2011 after leading the team to 94 wins. He was fired in 2014 just before the end of a disappointing 64-98 season.

Now an analyst for the Tigers for Fox Sports Detroit, he revealed in April that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
