40 years ago today Frank Robinson became the first black manager in major league history

April 8, 1975. Robinson's Cleveland team defeated the Yankees 5-3. The player-manager hit a home run in his first at-bat as the designated hitter.

A year earlier, in 1974, Braves outfielder Henry Aaron passed Babe Ruth as the all-time home run leader with his 715th, going deep in the fourth inning off Dodger hurler Al Downing in Atlanta's home opener. 'Hammerin' Hank' equaled the Bambino's mark on Opening Day in Cincinnati.

At Shibe Park, 15,000 fans witness the first legal baseball game between major league teams played on a Sunday in the city of Philadelphia. In a hometown exhibition game, the Phillies beat the A's, 8-1.
