During the annual Super Bowl media day, Lynch answered every question with some variation of "I'm here so I won't get fined." He occasionally changed the delivery but stuck to his script.
Lynch stayed at his designated podium for 4 minutes, 51 seconds -- over an hour less than all his teammates and coaches -- and was asked 29 questions. At the 4:51 mark, he said "time," stood up and walked away from the microphone.

(22,340 posts)I get that maybe public speaking isn't his thing and he may think it's all kind of stupid, but you make millions of fucking dollars and that fact means you need to be a public figure. Don't like doing this, then get a different job.

I don't blame him for getting pissed.

(10,893 posts)shouldn't get fined if they don't want to give interviews, and it's not as if what players typically say during interviews is that important or adds much to the game. It's mostly the standard "we executed well...I respect the other team...(name player) stood out..." or if they lose, it's "the other team outplayed us...we're going to practice more...change our plays...look forward to next week...etc." It's plain that Roger Goodell et al. will use any trick to shake the players down and get a few extra bucks.

(29,149 posts)creates a demand for the product, and with that in mind I don't have an issue with requiring them to have some media availability, especially in prep for the Super Bowl.
Of course, Lynch's choice to answer all the questions this way has become a story, so he's actually doing his part to feed the beast.

(29,322 posts)Its role is that way. Certainly earlier or decades since, coverage has helped create a demand for the product but today that would mostly be filled by national TV broadcasts, interviewers asking players questions is more of the demand people want in off-the-field coverage.
For me, I hate 99% of the spectacle nonsense that fills Super Bowl weeks & the Super Bowl itself. I watch it because of what happens within the 60 minutes of game clock.
I certainly have a different opinion when it comes to what the NFL requires, I also don't believe it has much of an impact with the demand already there.

(72,790 posts)"I've never seen anybody win the game in the media. But at the same time, I understand what it could do for you, if you wanted to be someone who talks a lot. But that's not me.
"And I'm not as comfortable, especially at the position I play, making it about me. As a running back, it takes five offensive linemen, a tight end, a fullback and possibly two wide receivers, in order to make my job successful. But when I do interviews, most of the time it'll come back to me. There are only so many times I can say, 'I owe it to my offensive linemen,' or, 'The credit should go to my teammates,' before it becomes run down.
"This goes back even to Pop Warner. You'd have a good game and they'd want you to give a couple of quotes for the newspaper, and I would let my other teammates be the ones to talk. That's how it was in high school, too. At Cal, I'd have my cousin, Robert Jordan, and Justin Forsett do it.
"Football's just always been hella fun to me, not expressing myself in the media. I don't do it to get attention; I just do it 'cause I love that (expletive)."

(9,527 posts)The amusing part of his media thing is that he could make it go away by answering a few questions and not repeating the same phrase over and over and still be out of there in the same time.

(16,950 posts)and because of his college football recruitment and his choice of college. He was heavily recruited by some big name powerhouse football schools, but he ultimately decided to stay closer home and chose Cal. Cal is a great academic school, but it is obviously not a big name football school for someone of his talent.
That's what I remember about him during that period. He got a lot of bad press because he declined schools like USC who was No. 1 in rankings for about 3 years straight during the time he was recruited. If I remember correctly, he got pissed at having to answer questions about his college choice, and I guess it stuck with him.

(29,322 posts)I completely agree with Lynch and was a big fan of his teammates rallying around him last year's media day.
