Giants get major contribution from oft-maligned farm system



ST. LOUIS — When the debate turns to the best farm system in baseball, nobody can go wrong championing the Cardinals. Year after year, the Giants’ foe in the National League Championship Series churns out quality homegrown players.

As it should. After all, the Cardinals invented the modern farm system in the 1920s under Branch Rickey. They have a legacy to maintain.

No playoff team this year fielded more homegrown players in the early rounds than the Cardinals’ 16.
