That does it! Boston Mayor disses the Broncos and Colorado Beer!

...Menino told reporters Thursday morning that he and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock are going to work out a wager later in the day over Saturday night’s game at Gillette Stadium

“He wants me to do the Tebow expression. I do that every Sunday in church,” said Menino, referring to Bronco quarterback Tim Tebow’s habit of taking to one knee to pray after big plays.

Instead, Menino was thinking about offering a sample of local beer.

“We have the best. I mean, you know, Colorado beer? It hasn’t even made it east yet. Sam Adams has made it to the west and Harpoon has made it out there, but Colorado Rocky beer? Uck,” Menino said.

But Menino was confident he wouldn’t have to give away any Boston brews, saying Denver’s game is about as weak as its beer.

But they are opening a new brewery in Ashville, NC soon so maybe the rest of America will be able taste the difference.

5. UPDATE

Jan 2012

Colorado Governor and former brewery owner John Hickenlooper on Menino’s statements. ““Tom Menino is one of the great mayors in America,” Hickenlooper said. “Obviously he hasn’t had enough time to learn about Colorado beer.”

Colorado is home to 120+ breweries. How many Boston breweries can you name off the top of your head?

I like TommyKnockers too.

I was drinking LeftHand for the game this last weekend. I haven't been a fan of their beers in the past, but I had a sampler pack and thought the Milk Stout was pretty good.

If the Denver Broncos win, Menino has agreed to drape a Tim Tebow jersey on the famous statue of Paul Revere on his horse and send Denver Mayor Michael Hancock a lobster dinner.

If the Patriots win, Hancock has agreed to wear a Patriots jersey to a public event and send Menino Colorado beef.

On the other hand, heading to the northwest, northern california and select spots in the midwest and northeast will serve one far better than the bland offerings the rockies tend to dish up.

They were originally a Colorado Brewery, but no longer.

I was a bit surprised to find this out pretty recently, but apparently it happened a couple of years ago.

Colorado boasts more than 120 craft brewers, is home to the headquarters for the Brewers Association and hosts the annual Great American Beer Festival, the largest such event in the country.

If Colorado and Massachusetts faced off in the brew house rather than on the gridiron, history shows Pats fans would be left crying in their less-prestigious beers.

Colorado breweries have won 491 gold medals over the course of the three-decade-old Great American Beer Festival. Massachusetts brewers? Just 94.

Oh, and Coors Light just became #2 in US beer sales.

And beer sales doesn't equal quality. Coors Light is now second behind Bud Light and ahead of Budweiser. Does that list scream "quality" to you?

In all honesty, though, Colorado does have some excellent beer. The problem is the perception, because they are more well known for the mega-brewery than for the good beers.

The majority of the winners from Colorado are in fruit beer and other lame categories. It's a bizarre beer culture there, and it's not meant for true beer lovers.
