Do you agree with Coach Belichick that the NFL should get rid of extra points?

More: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/23/bill-belichick-doesnt-see-the-point-in-extra-points/

Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently caused a stir when he said the NFL wants to eliminate kickoffs. Now Belichick has weighed in on a play that he says would be better suited to elimination: The extra point.

In an interview on WEEI, Belichick pointed out that the point after touchdown is so easy that it rarely creates any interest at all, and he said that if the league isnít going to make it harder, then the league should just get rid of it.

1. They could make it all two point conversions, but I think people like the way football is scored

and played.

3. One of the various replacement scoring options I have heard...

is that a touchdown is 7 points on the board, but if you want to go for 2, you will either get a point added (if successful) or taken away (if not).

Belicheat is somewhat right, however there are the occasional games (the Vikings' season opener against Jacksonville this past season is one) where an XP gets blocked and that point figures into the endgame strategy.

7. That doesn't sound too bad.

it leaves the 2-pt conversion essentially in tact. The extra point is usually when I go to change the laundry over or get a beer. I'm not "all for" getting rid of them, but I don't think I'd miss them if they disappeared. Hell, I don't think I'd miss them if I were kicking.

This season there were 6 total missed extra points from 5 different kickers out of 1235 kicked for a success rate of 99.5%.

In case you're wondering, and if you're a Seahawks fan you probably already know, Hauschka was the only one to miss 2.

4. Another thing I don't agree with Belichick on

Keep the PAT. And shut up, Bill.

5. This sounds like the designated hitter of the NFL

Maybe it's not quite that bad, but there is the occasional miss that looms large in a close game.

6. Kickers that do only kicks or punts are the DHs.

Been doing that a lot longer than the DH. The days of Jim Thorpe and George Blanda are long past.

8. I am addressing the true sin of the DH: removing a major element strategy from the game

I agree with Coach Bellyache up to the point he says that PATs are "almost" automatic. That is an empirical fact. However, it makes a difference in the game when the kick is missed and the coaches have to adjust accordingly, at least if the game is close.

I also agree with you that in football the kicker is a DH, but then in football everybody is. It's been a game of specialists for a long time. Back when Blanda was both kicking field goals and throwing TD passes for the Houston Oilers, Bart Starr would hand the ball to Paul Hornung in Green Bay and leave the defense to guess what he would do with it.

9. Keep it...often doesn't decide the game...

But sometimes it does...and making a team go for two can be exciting...

10. Put the ball on the 25 and kick it for one. Go for 2 from the 5.

11. I change my vote to no

This game is the only reason why -- Last game of the season, Saints need a win to stay alive for the playoffs (from what I understand, it didn't matter as it turned out), and this happens....
