Boise State to remain in Mountain West Conference, nixes Big East

Boise State has decided to back track and will stay in the Mountain West Conference, the league announced Monday.

The Broncos had announced in December 2011 that they were leaving for the Big East Conference, along with San Diego State.

The Big East could be over as a football conference. The league is also losing Louisville and Rutgers in football after 2013. The Big East is scheduled to add East Carolina and Tulane for 2014 to replace Louisville, which is going to the ACC, and Rutgers, which is going to the Big Ten.

San Diego State also could return to the Mountain West and would not have to pay an exit fee, according to the contract it signed with the Big East. Navy is scheduled to join the Big East in 2015.

1. LOL

They sacrificed their basketball side to improve their football side, only to be dealt this fatal blow. Won't be long til the Big East is finished.

2. Kind of sad, since they have been such a basketball conference. I enjoyed watching the Big East of

the 80's, 90's and 00's. Jim Boeheim is about the only one left from the coaches of the 80's (John Thompson, Lou Carneseca, PJ Carlissimo, etc.)

3. Big East was 'unwilling' to meet Boise State's terms

Boise State had committed to play football in the Big East, starting in 2013. But the school announced Monday it was reversing course and staying in the Mountain West. The Mountain West recently re-worked its television contract with CBS Sports Network to allow the conference to sell packages of its games to other networks. The deal will allow teams that appear on national TV more often to make more money. Also, the league agreed to sell Boise State home games in a separate package.

The Mountain West also agreed to allow teams in its conference that play in BCS games and the equivalent when the new postseason system starts in 2014 to keep half the money. The rest of the conference will split the other half. In most leagues, all bowl money is shared equally.

That deal, added to the most recent defections from the Big East that caused even more instability in that league, caused Boise State to change course.

San Diego State, another Mountain West team currently committed to play football in the Big East in 2013, also is reconsidering.
