(22,143 posts)Off the great setup by Williams. Hell of a game. This could be a long one, they look like mirror images of each other.

(24,853 posts)Did I hear the announcer say 9-0 on the road?
Oh and my goodness if it didn't sound like the announcers were from New Jersey...
MrSlayer
(22,143 posts)And controlled the play their fair share. It wasn't domination by any means. This is going to be quite competitive.
Doc Emerick is the best announcer in the game.

(24,853 posts)On July 21, 2011, Emrick announced that he was leaving the New Jersey Devils to work exclusively for NBC Sports.
On February 24, 2012, Emrick was honored by the New Jersey Devils in a pre-game ceremony for his 21 seasons doing play-by-play for the MSG Network, which broadcasts Devils game.

(22,143 posts)I've been following his career since he was a Flyers announcer on PRISM in the early 80's.
You should have heard the Devils fans bitching in the last series, calling him a traitor and whatnot.
I'll bet if you asked a Devil fan right now who he was "cheering" for you'd get an opposite answer. It's always that way when you have emotional stake.
I like both teams so I can be objective.
Emerick is the best.

(24,853 posts)And god what I would give to hear Vin Scully do the World Series on TV this year when the Dodgers go for the first time since '88.
Although if the planets aligned just so and things worked out that way, I'm sure he'd retire after a Dodger win so that's a double-edged sword.

(47,549 posts)Kings scored all three goals (heheheh), but the Devils ganked on at least two gimme scores.
Game 1 could've easily gone the other way.
Both teams were rusty. I think this may turn out to be a great series.
(Also, we haven't heard from Kovalchuk yet. That guy's a friggin surgeon with a hockey stick.)
GO KINGS GO.

(34,825 posts)looked like it bounced off of a defenseman and into the net. About had a heart attack when Quick went behind the net to clear the puck and whiffed!

(6,278 posts)But I don't think he is noticeably biased.
I do like that he actually describes the action; there are certainly some truly terrible announcers out there who chatter about everything else while the action is on. But there's a certain sameness about his play-by-play; he uses a list distracting words (mostly nouns employed as verbs) ("knifes/pitchforks/spears/ladles/spikes/cancels/filters/waffleboards/DRIIIIVE!!!" over and over, with a big focus on exactly how the stick hit the puck and little on the bigger picture as the play develops. It makes the game sound like a series of disconnected instinctive reactions to the approach of the puck.

(34,825 posts)he worked his ass off for that goal!

(6,278 posts)Nobody's picks to make it this far, but it looks like a great matchup for some hard-nosed hockey. I have no allegiance to either team but find myself drawn to the Kings, so I was happy with the outcome last night!

(2,050 posts)If the Kings take game 2, this is over in 5 at the most. The Devils have to start the game with a better effort. The Devils only had 5 shots in the first period and four in the second. They didn't register their first shot of the second period until 14 1/2 minutes had elapsed. I predicted the kings in 5 at the most and I'm sticking to my prediction. I think they win game 2 also.

(78,249 posts)Fuck no Fuck No FUCK NO!!!!
After losing their last two games to the Sharks and having to watch the scoreboard to make sure that Dallas completed its epic choke job, thus allowing their offensively-challenged selves to sleaze in to the eighth and final spot.
What a mockery this would be.

(24,853 posts)That's winning when it COUNTS.
9-0 on someone else's ice during the PLAYOFFS?
THAT'S an accomplishment for the ages.
Now, I'm more of a baseball fan than any other kind of sport. For that reason, I HATE the word "wildcard". But the nature of sport today is what it is.

(47,549 posts)It was musical chairs for the last month of the season. All three of the Pacific Division participants backed into the playoffs.

(78,249 posts)The Kings lost their last two games of the season, to the Sharks, and were reduced to nervous scoreboard-watching. And now this.
Come to think of it, if Winni, er, I mean Phoenix, hadn't won their last two games of the season -- on the road -- the Sharks would have won the division, as the FSM intended.

(29,322 posts)if Phoenix hadn't won their last five games of the season.....
Though those last two road games were huge. Though even if they had an OTL to Minnesota or St. Louis they still would have won the division due to tie-breaker over Sharks.

(78,249 posts)the hockey team of which you may be the only actual fan actually choked to these poseurs head-to-head, rather than watching the team that obliterated them in five go on to get swept by the punchless wonders.
edit: You're just proving my point: LA, and only LA, backed into the playoffs. What a joke.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)call it a choke depending on how you define it. I understood choking to be unable to perform at usual levels due to being nervous or pressure. Something like that is hard to prove. I just think they were simply outplayed, I think in Game 1 they probably choked as it took later on the series to play faster & w/control. Others define at as losing as favorites, the Kings were actually favored to win that series. In fact - after game 2 of the LA-STL series, LA had the highest odds of any West team to take the cup.
I understand the only actual fan line is sarcasm but they were popular during their America West Arena days, they developed a fan base in the East Phoenix and overall East Valley area. AWA wasn't well suited for hockey with seats actually hanging over the ice. They had an arena plan for Scottsdale which fell threw for some reason I can't remember but that would have been a better spot for the franchise. Their current location requires their fan base to make a long drive to Glendale. It isn't a big problem for Cardinals' games since they play on Sundays(and the occasional Monday) only 8 days a season. W/ hockey it's 40. I would like to attend some games but the Glendale arena is 50 miles from me and I don't have a car. 50 miles on bus would be impossible for night games and the weekend bus service in Mesa sucks due to Mormon influence in the city(they feel everything should be shut down for church).
I'll see if I can make the effort if the Jamison deal falls in place. But more than likely I'll only attend ASU football games since the light rail pulls up right next to Sun Devil Stadium.
Anyways, whether Kings backed in or not. They're proving themselves to be a great team.
