The prototype of the "good guy hero".

As a sidenote, I just got around to watching the Dr. Who Christmas special, and the Doctor's reference to Clark Kent and Superman being the same person (spoiler) was funny. (Also, a quick nod to Siegel and Shuster pop up in the episode.)

I do recognize pre-Superman characters could also be described as superheroes.

Robin Hood, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Zorro, The Shadow, The Phantom, etc.

Fascinating history of the genre. I look at Superman now as Elvis. He wasn't the first, but he's certainly recognized as the beginning.
