Authorities in Texas are investigating how a 12 year-old black girl who attends a mostly white private school ended up with severe rope burns around her neck after a school camping trip.
The girls family says she has been bullied for months and this incident was a racially motivated assault.
It looked like somebody had ripped her neck apart and stitched it back together, the girls mother, Sandy Rougely, told The Dallas Morning News. Live Oak Classical School, however, claims in a statement that the girl was injured accidentally while the students were playing with a rope attached to a tree.
Live Oak Classical School officials explain in a statement that the student and some of her classmates were playing with a swing and an attached pull-rope on a field trip. The student received first aid treatment immediately after the accident by a parent chaperone who is also a physician, and she was able to enjoy the remainder of the field trip, which lasted through the next day. Live Oak takes the safety of its students seriously and is saddened that one of its family suffered an unfortunate accident and injury.
School administrators have also accused the girls family of trying to exploit the incident for financial gain. They allege that the familys attorney, Levi McCathern, attempted to blackmail officials by demanding a $2.7 million dollar payout to prevent the story from going public. McCathern is also accused by school officials of trying to exploit the 100th anniversary of the lynching of Jesse Washington in Waco.
McCathern insists that he only offered a settlement amount after the school requested a financial demand.

(15,805 posts)1. The poor kid was obviously injured, so didn't anyone think she needed medical care?
Schools have rules for how they must handle kids that get hurt, so what happened? This sure sniffs like a cover up from the to down.

The prior bullying makes me think negatively on this.
