I saw this article this morning:
His parents found him slumped in the car and took him to Ryder Trauma Center where doctors treated his severe injuries, included a laceration to his head and a fractured orbital bone.
Shortly after he was admitted to the ER, detectives questioned Betancourt, who, according to the original police report, told investigators he was jumped by 4 to 5 unknown black males.
His faint answers quickly escalated into a story of a brutal attack, which dominated local media for days. Headlines reported on his recovery and his first steps were televised.
Two days after the attack, Miami police sent out a press release to media outlets with initial information on the incident, saying that possibly three black men approached the victim in the area of Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 3 Street and in the midst of the crime, beat him.

I'm happy to report, the Miami Police Department caught the "culprits" ...
As the skateboard flew from under him, he fell to the ground, staying motionless for about five minutes. Another video camera from the indoor garages elevator showed a crippled Betancourt with the skateboard under his arm as he rode down to the first floor, leaning limply against the wall.

(12,754 posts)I've treated kids with severe head wounds in the ER. They say/imagine/hallucinate some really weird stuff. This kid may not have even known what he was saying. It doesn't mean he doesn't have some racist thoughts deep down -- as many people of all colors do -- but he may not also have been making a deliberate false accusation.

(31,849 posts)But it's amazing that so many non-racists people of non-color seem to blame the Dangerous, Scary Black Guys and are believed ... until their story falls apart.
Maybe I'm just sensitive to such made up accusations because I have been considered a Dangerous, Scary Black Guy most of my life.

(1,185 posts)Maybe I missed something. But I don't remember anyone being afraid of Blacks before the fight for Equal Rights.
And they were definitely not afraid of them before the Emancipation.
IMHO, Fear of the "Scary Black Man" is just an excuse for Jim Crow.

(31,849 posts)We attempt to destroy that which we fear.
It could be argued that the brutal subjugation and murdering of Black males (and females), from times preceding slavery has been completely fear-based.

(51 posts)Maybe it was the same "pack of you-know-whats" that Mel Gibson wished upon his ex. Whew!!! Ridiculousness! This kid knew what he was saying. Did he get into trouble for making any false claims to the police or emergency room staff? His lie or "hallucination" could have resulted in the police going after some innocent suspects and grabbing the nearest black guys and locking them up. It happens a lot. Some people think that we all still look alike LOL. Terrible situation!

(8,053 posts)taken up looking for "scary black guys" in a parking structure which had freaking cameras mounted everywhere in which he probably was not even supposed to be skate boarding in the first place.
For liability purposes, most garages say that foot traffic cannot use the ramps--I'm sure that skate boarding is also not allowed. He needs to be pinched on that tip alone.
