CANADA WANTS U.S.VETERANS FOR PIPELINE WORK ?
Numbers sounds to High for Canuk to allow US worker? Anybody know if these could be even close?
VFW-backed VetJobs now posting thousands of new vacancies
July 02, 2012 The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is proud to announce that its partly owned veterans jobs board has secured an exclusive employment initiative with Alberta, Canada, that could see thousands of U.S. veterans heading north to work on their oil pipeline. “This is a great opportunity for veterans, transitioning military, National Guard and reservists, and their family members,” said Ted Daywalt, founder and CEO of VetJobs (www.vetjobs.com), a recognized industry leader in helping veterans find work. “Though America’s Keystone Pipeline is delayed, the Canadians are moving forward on their side of the border and have an immediate need for tens of thousands of workers,” said Daywalt, whose website averages more than 55,000 daily job postings by employers strictly interested in hiring veterans. He said the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation anticipates a shortage of 114,000 workers in the Alberta area, and they want to hire American veterans to fill that shortage. http://www.vfw.org/News-and-Events/Articles/2012-Articles/CANADA-WANTS-U-S-VETERANS-FOR-PIPELINE-WORK/

1. It looks like the real deal

Last edited Sat Jul 7, 2012, 02:40 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) I would assume it would also include the application fees/forms for a temporary work visa but I'm not sure about that.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/alberta-job-agency-turns-to-us-veterans-to-fill-vacancies/article4390155/?cmpid=rss1 On edit: that 114,000 number is an estimate over the next decade so it's not like they have all of these openings right now. On second edit: This is the info on the immigration/type of work. I wouldn't count on the temporary stay turning permanent. "What Alberta doesn’t need, he stressed, is unskilled labour – they are skilled jobs, such as welders, pipefitters and power engineers. They’ll be brought in as temporary foreign workers, meaning they can work for up to four years in Canada. Each job requires a Labour Market Opinion, or a government form saying Canadians can’t fill the jobs themselves. The United States typically accounts for more temporary foreign workers than any other country." |

6. The jobs
|
It is the real dea. Yes, over the next 5 to 10 years there will be a shortage of 114,000, but there are many jobs open right now and there are not enough workers to fill them. That is what the EEDC has been going to England, the US, etc to find people to fill the jobs. Right now, the jobs are in infrastructure and industry - once the pipeline is approved, there will be an even larger shortage of labor.

9. Thanks

Unemployment is rampant among vets and lots of them have the skills needed for this kind of work so hopefully a mutually beneficial arrangement can be made.
and welcome to DU. |

5. Your post about only Canadians
|
I understand your feelings, but there is a looming shortage of 114,000 workers in the Calgary/Edmonton area. The veterans who come up to work, many on contract, are not taking jobs away from Canadians - there are not enough Canadians to fill the jobs that exist!

3. I'm torn...

I'm a dual American/Canadian citizen who is a veteran of the US Army, so immigration wouldn't be an issue (since I can waltz across the border at-will), and it'd be a great job for me once the temp job I'm working ends.
The only problem is that it's a PIPELINE. Oswego "and it's in Alberta. That too." Atheist |

Last edited Sat Jul 7, 2012, 09:41 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Canadians who work at Tim Horton's (like a Starbucks) get $16.00/hr. Hiring US veterans is just a way to get away from the actual market rate jobs are paid in Alberta (which is much higher than anywhere else in Canada or the USA). I thought conservatives liked markets? I thought markets were always right !!!!!

7. Sounds political to me!

A way for those pro pipeline to say its hurting jobs. Because all the estimates for the amount of jobs this pipeline was to "create" we're all bullshit. Another way to pressure putting this pipeline to ship foreign oil through the US to foreign customers.
We have several thousand bridges that could use some rebuilding right here in the US which if the Republics would stop trying to tank the economy during the election lead up could hire prett much all the vets coming back and already home. |
