Bill Kristol: John Kerry hasn’t supported enough wars to be secretary of state

Bill Kristol: John Kerry hasn’t supported enough wars to be secretary of state
By David Edwards

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol on Sunday suggested that Republican senators should confirm United States Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice if she is nominated as secretary of state because she is more likely to support going to war than Sen. John Kerry (D-MA).

The conservative columnist told Fox News host Chris Wallace that Rice had made a mistake by not being more clear that the September attacks in Benghazi were terrorism but Kerry had a history of opposing military intervention.

“I rather think (President Barack Obama) will appoint Susan Rice and I think — I’m not a huge fan of hers — but I think she’s likely to be confirmed by the Senate,” Kristol explained. “And an awful lot of people might decide, you know, given the range of alternative appointments, maybe she’s not — John Kerry, in my opinion, might be a worse secretary of state. Maybe one just goes ahead and lets him have the secretary of state he wants.”

“I think Susan Rice has been a little more interventionist than John Kerry,” he pointed out. “John Kerry was a guy who loved the Assad regime in Syria. John Kerry has been against our intervening in every war we’ve intervened in, the first Gulf War. In Iraq, he was for it before he was against it.”

unhappycamper comment: Uuuuh. The Secretary of Defense is the Secretary of War, not the supposedly diplomatic Secretary of State that has all those little CIA hotspots imbedded. Is Billy confused, dazed, or just letting us know who does what?

And, he's usually wrong.

So, either of the choices he does not like sound good to me.

6. So the litmus test for SOS is whether you support war?

A little more interventionist like John Bolton, for example, or Condy Rice? I thought a SOS was supposed to be the head diplomat for our country, not the head war monger/hawk. And Kristol shouldn't even mention flip-flopping, after Romney's split personality. So, what's he supposed to be an "expert" on SOSs for FAUX News? Gawd...

9. WH with willing cooperation of GOP have done a skillful job of casting Rice as a victim

The liberal Democratic base, which would otherwise be skeptical of Rice, have circled their wagons around her. As with Iraq, hawks and neocons in both parties are working toward the same things: wars with Syria and Iran.

Kristol is right, " she is more likely to support going to war than Sen. John Kerry."

15. Don't you see?

Kristol is running interference for Rice!

Since McCain so polluted the pond, this is a misdirection to bring the McBelievers back from the edge of lies.

Susan Rice for war? That's good enough for me! Confirmed.

Even if it isn't true.

Kristol knows the Republican party needs to move on. They have America stuck in the mud. This is his way to give a push.

Or not.

19. Has there ever been a woman appointed to the

head of any of these "war" branches? CIA, FBI, I know Homeland Security has a woman head, but it seems that the war guys just get switched around at the top. And they all seem to want to keep their expensive war machines going.

The last 2 SoS have been women. Diplomacy gets the back seat and less money, while the boys get their toys and make more messes. Those drone strikes may keep troops alive from an actual battlefield, but they r extremely dangerous.

24. Kristol is always an ideologue, just plain looney and wrong

Being an "interventionist" has suddenly become a requirement for Secretary of State?

How has Kristol's kind of interventionism worked out for us? I know his answer: Iraq was a good idea, he'll say.

Thank you for your concern on this matter, Mr. Kristol. Next time we want your opinion, we'll call you and ask for it.

(I thank Raw Story for mercifully cutting the clip before Chris Wallace turned to Dizzy Lizzie.)

25. I want someone who is smart enough to side step this clap trap. Someone like Feingold.

"He was also the only Senator on the Foreign Relations, Intelligence, and Judiciary committees, which makes him uniquely qualified to fight the modern wars we now find ourselves involved in.

Russ Feingold has also been one of the most outspoken critics of the Patriot Act and the erosion of our individual liberties. His new book, "While America Sleeps," will fully explain his strong opposition to warrantless wiretapping, secret law, and human rights abuses committed by our government since 9/11. Obama has not been able to institute his view for America's military because, as Commander-in-Chief, he's had the responsibility of concluding the wars he inherited, but I fully expect his second term to reflect his true views on America's role in the world.

Lastly, Feingold's message that he will not be running for "elective office" leaves plenty of room for him to be appointed Secretary of State. He's already promising to play a role in getting Obama reelected, "I was especially thinking of the need to reelect President Obama. I will be working to reelect him and hope to play a significant role in that effort." The Citizens United decision didn't discourage Russ Feingold. He's not going to sit on the sidelines as a law professor for much longer. Rather than bring progressive change to the State of Wisconsin, which has proven to be able to stand up for itself, he's going to help President Obama make progressive change globally."He was also the only Senator on the Foreign Relations, Intelligence, and Judiciary committees, which makes him uniquely qualified to fight the modern wars we now find ourselves involved in.

Seriously, Kristol is a walking fail at pretty much every issue he pontificates on. His predictions are universally incorrect, his assessments are never right and his hunches never, ever pan out. Why is anyone listening to this man?

31. How long did Kristol serve in the military??

Kristol is just ANOTHER Republican chickenhawk, coward talking through his ass. The United States Navy awarded Kerry with a couple of Silver Stars for Heroism in Vietnam (another Conservative Waste of Money, and poor kids lives) while Kristol is another in a long line of gutless Republicans that were too frightened to serve in the military, or too rich to be concerned about the nation's defense. Ooops. Forgot Bush, the Military Deserter. Joined the Texas Air Guard until an upcoming piss test was going to reveal he was a major coke user. Who cares what Kristol says. He's a coward.
