How many guns are there REALLY in America?

The most common figure I see indicate that there are between 290 & 350 million guns in this country. Iím a little curious about how that number was reached and whether or not it accounts for firearms sold prior to the gun control act of 1968 which is the first time that I am aware of that firearms sales were required to be tracked. I also wonder how accurate it is.

My grandfather owned several rifles and shot guns that were manufactured and sold decades prior to 1968, they are still in use and I canít imagine that any record of ownership transfer exists anywhere regarding those guns and Iím sure those arenít the only such guns in this country. Where do they fall into the 300 million number?

1. Just read an interesting response on another board

The poster posited that even the higher number was very low. His rationale was that there are thought to be at least 80 million gun owners in this country and that most of them own more that on gun. He stated that in his circle the average was 10 so using his figures

80 million gun owners X 10 guns per owner I'd guess there are closer to 800 million guns in this country

3. The best anyone can do to to estimate the number. ...

for the reasons you mentioned.

If a firearm receives a minimum amount of maintenance and is stored properly it will be functional for centuries. My great, great, great grandchildren's children could inherit some of my firearms and if they could find the proper ammo, the weapons could still work.

Of course by that time technology will have advanced considerably. Today's modern firearms will be considered as outdated as a flintlock musket from the Revolutionary War.

4. more than enough to stop mad mass shooters..

... as should happen when a gun gets pulled out in the mall according to the gun religionist arguments.

So how many guns are needed? One on each hip of every shopper in America?

6. The reason I asked this question is to get a feel for how many guns there actually are in the US

The sheer number is one of the reasons I don't believe any attempt to register them oe require background checks on private sales has any hope of succeeding

7. Try again

Common thread ...

Aurora theater

Clackamas Mall

Virginia Tech

NIU

Etc.

All gun free zones. The law abiding are officially disarmed.

Funny how that works out.

It would be nice if the anti-gun religionists would be a little less ignorant of the facts before spewing their beloved and closely held religious tenets.

5. How many guns are destroyed each year by police confiscations and buy-back programs?

8. Where is the place this photo was taken?

Oh, wait, found it. Arms captured and destroyed from the nation of Georgia by the Russians.

Wonder what the terms for the 'buy-back' were?

9. Not very many.

BTW, that isn't a gun buyback, that's a pile of M4 rifles that were burned by Russian soldiers during the South Ossetian War.

Nice try, though.

10. "Not very many" doesn't seem like an accurate figure

Where did you find the statistic?

The picture is only meant to represent destroyed guns.
