Neighbors point guns at each other over trespassingLast edited Mon Nov 19, 2012, 07:54 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Hold onto your butt, because this story is sure to stir up some controversy. It all started with a pair of 15-year-old boys. Earlier this week in Covington, Georgia, the teens thought it would be a good idea to ride their four-wheelers on somebody else’s property without getting permission.
Damus Oscar Mullicax, 77, wasn’t too fond of the pair trespassing on his property, so he grabbed rifle and held the kids at gunpoint. Whoa there, Mullinax. Drawing your gun on masked robbers is one thing, but aiming a rifle at teenagers who are just being dumb might be overkill, so to speak. Meanwhile, the kids did pretty much exactly what you would expect them to do: they phoned for mommy. The mother called dispatch, grabbed her own gun, and then went to Mullinax’s property. She picked up a male friend on the way. When she arrived the mother pointed her handgun at Mullinax and ordered him to drop his weapon, which he refused to do. There was then a physical altercation wherein the mother fired two rounds into the air. It ended when one of the men knocked her to the ground and took the gun. It is unclear from reports whether the man who took the gun was her male friend or Mullinax. The mother and the male friend then retreated into the woods to join up with the teenagers. They all waited for the police to arrive. http://www.guns.com/georgia-trespassing-incicent-11392.html

1. I'm looking for a 250-300 ATV for my son.
|
Right now he rides my neighbors ATV's and Motorbikes, and I have more property than either of them.
All I can say is they better stay off National Forest or having a neighbor pointing a gun at them will be the least of their problems. |

7. Landowner did the right thing - should not have been arrested.
|
The two teenagers were trespassing, and when caught, one of their mothers and a boyfriend came and trespassed also, while armed and firing a handgun and pointing it at the landowner.
So, two kids were breaking the law, then mother and friend come and break the law coming to the lawbreaking kids' rescue. I don't understand why the landowner was arrested here. |

8. The teenagers were armed and had the potential to do harm.
|
If the landowner was unarmed the teens had the potential to run him down with their machines.
On my uncles farm he's had trail riders trash his corn and wheat. When he shows up they blow right by him on their quads giving him the finger as they flee. The police are unable to give chase through the woods and fields. Not a whole lot of difference between this type of activity and robbing a grocery store. Property damage that endangers the lively hood of the victim. Piss ass parenting otherwise. |

9. I had similar problems with OHV riders
|
Large gates and moving some boulders addressed it on the street side. On the government land side, I used a down tree to block the only entrance. I also go armed on my property for snakes. That alone put the trespassing twits in a real dither. I've posted stories about that here in the past.

10. A little common sense.
|
My uncle would not have cared if they had stayed on the dirt road and passed through. But being idiots they made circles in the crops. Nothing worse than trashing a person's work. A lot of land owners totally close their land off to hunters/ATV people because they don't use their heads.

My real problem is that my property had been identified as a public riding area in some online sites and a local M/C shop (where I do business) was sending people there. I got that fixed (despite some very negative online comments). However some campers/riders were not interested in listening or leaving what amounted to my front yard. Add alcohol and it got bad.
The local sheriff deputies got to know the way out here fairly well. I towed some trucks/rigs though if it was late and they were polite, I would let campers leave in the AM. Eventually the local constabulary asked me to take better steps (multiple warning signs and a chain across the access road were considered not enough) so I put in the mother of all gates. Have some amusing war stories, though they were not fun at the time. People who lost their dog by letting it run off in the dark and it was killed by the local cougars. A drunk insisting I open up the restrooms or he was going to pee on my front door. People saying they were friends of the owner, assuming that because I am black, I was some sort of care taker. Those kind of things. |

12. I had some ATV riders ask me once where they were.
|
My response was "On my land that I pay for." They continued to cross my yard and my neighbors yard and took the main road back from where they come. Before the evening was out I'd put in two new fence posts and 5 strands of barbwire.
I was once asked if I knew where the line was by a guy (who was leasing a neighboring farm) I'd just watched cross our fence. I pointed behind him and said "You crossed it about 40 yards ago. Your lease is on the other side." He didn't even respond he just went back the way he come. LOL |

Non country people often miss what are obvious demarcation lines. Its when they get belligerent or destructive that I get annoyed.

the sheriff's deputy drove off the highway, on our driveway, across the pasture, and kept going. I don't know how they thought this was a good idea. They stopped quite suddenly when they kept going and ran into the plowed portion that is going to be replanted with clover in the spring. Fortunately, they didn't do any real damage (except to their car).
