Concealed Carry Referendum Passes In Ten Illinois Counties

http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2012/11/08/concealed-carry-referendum-passes-in-ten-states/

SPRINGFIELD, IL (IRN) - The point man for “concealed carry” in Illinois is somewhat encouraged by the results of advisory votes in 10 counties Tuesday.

“I think it shows the frustration that people have with the lack of advancement on the issue with the legislature,” says Todd Vandermyde, lobbyist for the National Rifle Association in Illinois.

While some would say an advisory referendum carries no weight, Vandermyde disagrees, saying it spotlights the Chicago and suburbs vs. Downstate divide on concealed carry.

He says he’s awaiting the results of a federal court case which could strengthen concealed carry as a right, not a privilege. That, he says, could determine the chances of a concealed carry bill in the next General Assembly, which convenes Jan. 9.

The 10 counties voting for the referendum were Adams, Bond, Henry, McDonough, Mercer, Randolph, Rock Island, Schuyler, Stephenson and Warren.

That means over 50% of the voters in those counties want legal concealed carry, even though most of them will never use it. The people are speaking and they want to be able to carry guns if they feel the need. They want the decision to be theirs, not the local sherriff's.

1. Has anyone considered the danger in allowing local cops to decide who get a concealed carry permit?

I'm glad for those voters in Illinois. We need to take discretion away from local cops and make carry permits "shall issue" contingent on satisfying certain requirements.

I know that there's a lot of crooked sheriff's offices and police departments who would have no problem discriminating on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or political affiliation in deciding who gets permits.

2. You're right. After MLK's Birmingham house was bombed in '56, he applied for a CCP. Denied. nt

3. We are pushing for "Shall Issue"

We know they'll try to offer a "May Issue" version when they see it's inevitable. But that's a scam to raise campaign contributions for the local Sheriff and Judge elections.

It's already passed once with a simple majority, only 6 votes short of the 2/3 required to over ride a veto, and the speaker of the house, Madigan, sat on it in committee.

Governor Quinn, a gun grabber in the Daley mold, promised to veto it if it reached his desk, so we're working on the 6 votes we need to over ride him. He and his buddy Rahm are still talking about "blood in the streets", "shoot outs over traffic accidents" and all the other hogwash that never came to pass in 49 other states.

Keep vetoing it, that worked out so well for Ann Richards in Texas, all we got from that was W. And Doyle in Wisconsin vetoed CCW twice and now we have Scott Walker. Smart move people.

But after raising the income tax by 67% and spending it all on new projects and using none of it to pay down what the state owes on AFSCME and teacher's union pensions ($Billions) Quinn's chances of re-election are looking slimmer by the day.

I guess they think we're just too stupid to shoot straight and be honest citizens like all those other states.
