Prominent Mass. Pike billboard updating message to call for US ban on assault weapons

A prominent billboard known for its eye-catching gun-control ads now feature an updated message calling on voters and lawmakers to support a renewed federal ban on assault weapons.

The billboard, 252 feet by 20 feet, hangs above the Massachusetts Turnpike near Fenway Park. Thursday evening, it was transformed to read “Assault weapons have stopping power. Fortunately, so does your vote. We need a Federal Assault Weapons Ban NOW!’’ The second and third sentences are separated by a bloody handprint.

The new message, which replaces an ad highlighting the numbers on gun violence and deaths, comes just weeks before close presidential and statewide elections and in a year that has seen mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., and at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. Semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips were used in both those attacks.

10. good one

"Recto-cranial insertion disorder"
A term that covers many argument poor, pro-control propagandists.

8. We don't need any kind repeal of my civil rights, thank you very much.

We do need to deliver proper mental health care in the U.S. We do need to actually enforce the myriad of laws on the books already. We do need to have a rational discussion about what is fueling the violence in our cities. None of this has a thing to do with me and my life. Quite simply, I'm not the problem. People like me are about as safe a bet as you can find. And there are far more people like me than the deranged criminal set. So engaging in some kind of collective punishment fueled by some kind of ginned up moral outrage strikes me as quite dumb.

It gets tiring being lectured by moral crusaders about the evils of a topic that they really know absolutely zero about. They're as dumb as the folks who gave us the War on Drugs, Prohibition, and the Religious Right.

9. It's just so obvious...

...that more will die in accidents due to this billboard distraction than would be saved by a ban on a made-up and undefinable class of firearms. What an insult to any voter with both an IQ above 90 and any interest in the topic.

11. The Boston Globe

Hopefully they have something of value to contribute in the essence of information as their shoddy proofreading leaves much to be desired.

a mock ransom note from the NRA, declaring “We have your president and Congress.’’

Steve Martin: "But the most amazing thing to me is I get paid for doin' this."

13. Meanwhile, John Parker asks Isaac Davis:

"Why did we suffer so much for those fools?"

Boston chooses Gage.

14. Mass. Ban is more comprehensive than the old Federal one.

Mass already has fairly strict laws regarding guns and assault weapons. And I havn't heard of any cases where an AK47 clone or similar assault weapon has been brought in from New Hampshire or Vermont for crimes here. Not that people from either state can easily get permits to bring a long gun into the state either.
