Man Shoots Girfriend - Takes Her to Hospital - Gets Arrested

The Wall Street Journal reports

A Hudson Valley is being held without bail after police say he shot his girlfriend in the face, then brought her to a hospital.

Police in the Ulster County town of Lloyd tell local media outlets that 27-year-old Jorge Marrero used a handgun to shoot Lauren Watts during an argument last Sunday in their apartment in the hamlet of Highland.

Marrero took Watts to Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie after the shooting. The hospital then notified police that a shooting victim was being treated there.

Marrero was charged with felony counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.


You have to have a really explosive anger problem to do something like that. Unfortunately, this kind of rage is not limited to criminals. A certain percentage of lawful gun owners have it too, just like all other societal ills.

One thing for sure, whether the bad actor is a criminal or a legitimate gun owner, guns are bad news for women. The gun-rights fanatics are so defensive about this, recently they were arguing that female-on-male domestic violence is a factor. They always demand statistics and proof, then when it's provided they ignore it.

There's definitely a violence problem in the US. Guns make it worse.

That much I can agree with. The rest? Same ol' same ol.

So do knives. And bricks. And baseball bats. And fists. And bottles. And tire irons.

What's the common denominator in all these?

The violence.

It seems like THAT is what we should be addressing.

Since you seem to have gotten the notion that guns somehow make violence worse, you might want to study the histories of the Roman and Mongol empires.
They regularly did things sans firearms that would make a Wehrmacht field marshal blanch...

You're right. You see, there are no women in the US who own guns. It's only bad, mean men who do that.

After all, why would women want to own or know how to use the one thing that can put an attacker, no matter how big, fat, or tall, or drunk, six feet under? Women are just too nice and pure and delicate and hysterical to even think of doing that, even for the protection of their pretty little selves.

C'mon now. Unless 'women' are prepared to kick a male attacker's a$$ in hand to hand combat, NOT having a gun is 'bad news for women.'

Yes, and that percentage is very small.

Most people who commit homicide with a firearm have extensive prior criminal histories, including, on average, 4 felonies.
I'm sure the trend is similar to people who commit any kind of crime with a firearm.

It takes a long time to build up a comfort with devaluing human life, and this is usually showcased by a long criminal history of victimizing people.

The idea that "every gun owner is a potential criminal waiting to snap" is a myth.

It's a very small minority of the population that is anti-social enough to resort to violence.

The article provides citations that support the case that most people who have committed homicide have extensive prior criminal histories.

Very few people just "snap" and kill someone.

It's quite another thing to provide data to the contrary.
