"They aren't using AK-47's they're using handguns"

I'm disappointed in the President's pushing for re-instating the AWB, but I was glad to hear him say that AK-47's are not the problem, it's handguns.

I am disappointed that he has gutted the intent of the second amendment by saying that military weapons don't belong in the hands of civilians.

How can the people keep and bear arms for military service if they aren't allowed military-grade weapons?

1. Generally you do that by signing up for the Armed Forces.

They issue the military-grade weapons.

3. That is not what the 2nd amendment says.

The second amendment says that the people are supposed to keep and bear arms so that they can serve as military forces in an emergency.

7. While you will get "military grade" firearms by signing up in the armed forces...

The citizenry -- if the militia is called up -- is required to report, bearing an infantry (non-crew-served) arm (usually a rifle) which is in proper operating condition, which can be operated by the citizen reporting, and is suitable for military service.

Most experts on "military grade" weaponry would characterize the AK-47 "clones" and AR-15 platformed-rifles (the stuff in the gun stores), etc. as NOT military grade because they have neither the capability of firing full-auto nor firing "bursts" of 3-or-so rounds per trigger pull. Curiously, to meet the requirements of the "militia clause" in the Second Amendment, the common semi-auto look-a-like rifles which send gun-banners into a panic may not be of proper "military grade" for that reason. Of course, firearms evolve much like the "press" in the First Amendment has evolved to include T.V., radio, laptops, hand-helds, etc. as means of protected speech. In other words, no one expects you to show up for militia service with a flintlock rifle, any more than one would expect us to be using the wooden screw press.

Politically speaking, if I were a gun-controller I'd let sleeping dogs lie unless someone wants to push the intent of the Constitutional framers of what is a suitable military arm.

2. This has upset my husband and I am sorry he said this

It will lose a lot of votes where I live. It did nothing when we had it before and it will do nothing now.

4. Yup. It's political poison.

But he had no choice but to say what he did. It is now (again) part of the Democratic Party Platform. He could not repudiate it, unfortunately.

5. Yep

He just validated every NRA talking point and you'll see the media flooded with attack ads. If he would have left out the assault weapons ban and just stuck to the rest it would have been a good response.

10. It could cost him the election

It only takes a few % to swing this in the Romney camp.

Obama was doing good on this issue.
I think the question was a plant by a republican to make him lose votes.

And we have DU members cheering the question and answer.

They were smart to ask him this.

It's going to cost him.

Handguns are not a problem. Handguns are tools. Crime is a problem. Crime aided by the use of handguns can be worse, but handguns on their own are just tools with many legitimate defensive potential uses as well.

I am disappointed with Obama's statements regarding the Second Amendment, but this issue will not determine how I vote. Romney is of course too awful in so many other ways. And for that matter, Romney is pretty awful about Second Amendment issues as well.

12. I don't think it's going to determine most here but

did you see the undecided voters?

I thought I was watching an episode of the Walking brain dead.

It only takes a few of those to swing this either way.
The gun issue is poison.

always has been in elections
