Gun Control; Canadian Point of View

Apparently some Canadians object to nanny state laws as well.

1. Whataya expect? Canada's Sun News is their FOX News.
|
Don't get too excited thinking you will shortly be able to pack a gun from northern most Canada to Cape Horn.

Of course some will point out that Canada has a far lower rate of gun violence than the United States. While true, it is somewhat foolish to compare different cultures and environments. We have an estimated 300 million firearms in our nation while Canada has perhaps between 7 and 11 million firearms. We have an estimated 52 million firearms owners while Canada has perhaps 2.4 million. We have a amendment to our constitution that allows firearm ownership while Canada doesn't. We have a long history of firearm ownership and a well developed gun culture that Canada lacks. Much of the violent firearm related crime in our nation is a result of our failed War on Drugs which has resulted in criminal gangs that often engage in turf warfare. While gang related shootings are becoming more common in Canada, it is not as prevalent as in our nation. While it could be argued that if we had firearms laws similar to those in Canada our crime rate involving firearms would drop, such laws would be impossible to implement in our nation. Canada has largely banned the ownership of handguns. That is merely a pipe dream of those who favor draconian gun control in the United States. Yet despite the availability of firearms our violent crime rate has dropped to levels last seen in the sixties. edited for missing portion of sentence. |

But seriously, folks. This is what keeps any compromise on gun laws from taking place in the United States. I'm an extremist; I find the current laws unacceptably strict. However, a lot of other gun owners would be willing to compromise, and even support certain stricter measures, if there weren't overwhelming evidence that any compromise would eventually lead to Canadian-style(or worse) restrictions. There is no convincing us that this isn't the ultimate goal of gun control, because it has happened in almost every single other nation in the world.
