18 y/o arrested for carrying a loaded M1 Garand rifle in downtown Birmingham Alabama.

wow, I just don't want to live in a culture where kids, or anyone for that matter, are openly carrying riffles everywhere.

Combs' choice to carry the M1 Garand slung over his shoulder resulted in his arrest by Birmingham Police – an experience his close friend Lia Grabowski calls "terrifying."

Grabowski spoke up on Combs' behalf Monday, saying her friend "was in his legal right" when he was arrested.

Grabowski, 17, also a senior at Troy High, said she was with Combs at the time of his arrest Friday and witnessed Combs' exchange with police.

“We were just walking down to Birmingham," Grabowski said. "We weren’t doing anything. There were groups of kids walking around.

"He’s a huge supporter of open carry and the right to bear arms, and he thought he could legally carry. He wasn’t going to use it on anyone. Obviously, he could have defended himself, but he wasn’t looking for a fight.”

<snip>

Combs declined to comment Monday without his attorney present. He is scheduled to be arraigned May 2 on charges of disturbing the peace, brandishing a weapon and obstructing an investigation.

1. Another stupid kid following gun obsessed mentors. A shame.

"He could have defended himself" according to his buddy -- from what, I have no idea. They both remind me of the kids of gun carriers I've known. I hope the police file charges. Need to teach these budding Zimmermans a lesson at a young age, because dad and mom didn't.

21. The implication was, he could have defended himself from the police officers, if he was up to no goo

d. That cartridge would perforate a police officer's vest probably twice over.

So the implication from his 'friend' was, he wasn't looking for trouble, as he didn't kill or even attempt to kill the officers that arrested him.

39. I'm a little surprised they didn't charge him with that, too.

Obviously, they didn't charge him with illegally carrying a firearm so I'll assume that it's legal in that state for an 18 y/o to be in possession of a long gun and that it's legal to have such a weapon on or about one's person.

Brandish:
1: to shake or wave (as a weapon) menacingly
2: to exhibit in an ostentatious or aggressive manner

Simply having a rifle slung over your shoulder does not fit either of those definitions, IMHO. If the D.A. takes the position that simply being seen with a rifle is "menacing" enough then it's difficult to see how one could ever transport one anywhere without being in violation.

I think there's a good chance he'll beat the rap but it's probably going to cost him (his parents) a bunch of money and I bet his rifle gets "lost" somewhere in the police property room. (Or the judge's gun cabinet.)

4. you would not have like where I grew up

Every Thursday there were about 20 or 30 high school kids carrying unloaded rifles to school. Cops would drive by, think nothing of it.
Some of us walked, some did not. Once at school, we put the guns in our lockers, box of shells on the shelf. There it sat until after our classes. From there, we took them to the range in the basement.
no shootouts
our armed robberies averaged one a decade

7. Sounds like my high school every day during deer season.

Since our lockers were not big enough to hold the rifles, they were all stacked against the wall in the principal's office.

22. Shotguns for us during bird season

Walked into school and checked them in at the principals office along with any ammunition we had.

In season it was not unusual to have 10 to 20 shotties leaning against the wall, side by sides, pumps and for the "rich" kids one or two semi autos they borrowed from Dad or Grandpa, actions all opened of course. This was the era before ECI flags were common.

On the way home we worked the cut over cornfields and hedgerows looking for pheasant, rabbit and the occasional quail. I guess we just weren't smart enough to terrorize those around us.

15. That's nothing

At my high school, it seemed nearly everybody wore body armor & carried an RPG with lotsa ammo in a little trailer they pulled behind themselves from class to class. Most people also had at least a machine pistol & a couple of automatics.

It was HEAVENLY!

35. Refute you! No more than we need to argue with flat earth society members

The militia interpretation isn't even a footnote in law books any more. When Tribe and Derhsowitz dropped it over a decade ago that was pretty much the last gasp outside the Brady bunch PR team.

So is it safe to assume that as part of your action plan to correct all the misinformed gun zealots out here that you probably won't be voting for that guy in the WH that also believes that it's an individual right, not connected with service in a militia? Or will you be big about it and overlook his "stupidity" on the issue?

Please fill us in on what else you are doing to correct what you are sure are the misperceptions on the 2nd amendment.

Let me guess, in the real world you are actually doing nothing?

38. Makes me think of Northfield Minnesota - the James and Younger Gang attempted bank robbery

Candidate for the world's worst criminal timing.

Deciding to rob the bank on the opening day of deer season, when pretty much every adult in town had a loaded rifle either on them or handy.

The gang got no money and totally shot up by the armed citizenry.

Jesse got away, but Frank got shot up and at least one of the Younger brothers was killed. Doesn't pay to screw with the life savings of armed farmers and deer hunters.
