Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Firearm sales...

...are booming.

From Sturm, Ruger & Co:
CEO Michael O. Fifer made the following comments: The Company's Retailer Programs that were offered from January 1, 2012 through February 29, 2012 were very successful and generated significant orders from retailers to independent wholesale distributors for Ruger firearms. Year-to-date, the independent wholesale distributors placed orders with the Company for more than one million Ruger firearms. Despite the Company's continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity to rapidly fulfill these orders. Consequently, the Company has temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders. The Company expects to resume the normal acceptance of orders by the end of May 2012.

RGR: (NYSE) +13.31% at today's close. At $47.93 the stock is at an all time high.

I imagine the republicans are buying all those damn guns. No self-respecting liberal would touch them.

1. Well quite a few

are buying them up because that scumbag Wayne LaPierre has convinced a bunch of submoronic flatheads that Barack Obama was only biding his time during the first term and he's really gonna come and get those guns if he gets a second term.

These same submoronic flatheads are kind of worried because savior #1 Newt Gingrich fell flat and now savior #2 Rick Santorum looks to be self immolating his candidacy so it appears the tanned guy in the White House is going to get a second term. Nothing terrifies these idiots more than a ranting Wayne LaPierre and a tanned guy with power so they go and buy a bunch of shit they don't need.

I happened to think of this about 6 months ago when I put my bets on Obama winning the election and bought Ruger stock at about $30 just like I did with defense stocks shortly after shrubbo stole the election in 2000. Nothing is more predictable than the moron rightwing in this country... Just look at Ruger stock, every election cycle the NRA convinces the idiot members that something bad is coming and the idiots go out and buy more stuff.

4. Oh it's not their fault

I mean c'mon they've been a defacto arm of the Republican party since that sneering little shit LaPierre took the position he now holds in the NRA so they just do the job they're supposed to.

If you know how to read the tea leaves you too can make some dough off the fuckwits answering the whistle.

I haven't belonged the the NRA in almost 20 years now and haven't had the big bad gubmint hasn't taken anything away from me.

8. Good old Wayne scaring good old boys and girls

he starts at 1:18 of video.

I don't think gun ownership has much to do with liberal/conservative politics. It has a lot more to do with rural/urban living. Myself and my liberal friends own guns. We just don't wave em in peoples faces, scream a radical view of the Second or have NRA bumper stickers. Myself and some others have CCWs but only carry about 1/10 of the time we go out. Never to church or coffee shops. The last thing we'd ever want to do is shoot another human. I can't ever see any of my friends holding a gun on anyone and telling them to make my day. In other words, we are more likely to see our guns as sporting equipment, for target shooting and rarely as self defense. We are more likely to see handguns and longs as tools and not as an object of love and admiration and we rarely think about them anymore than we think about that old pair of hunting boots in the closet.

Which means"pick it up, load it, and fire" in Korea.

They will be safe to fire, but well worn.

there's no money to be made off of that? You gotta get the new stuff and the artificially short stocked and price jacked ammo so you can be prepared to fight off the mighty armies that are coming for your stuff.

There is a ton of money to be made off selling those rifles at $600 - $1200+ a piece. Love to buy a pair of Correct Grade M1's and will do so before the end of the year providing there are any available.

15. That price will depend a lot on condition.Remember these are from Korea

and were in active service up to 1990 or so. A lot of ammo and steel cleaning rods have gone through those bores! No worry about corrosive ammo, 30carb has always been made with NC primers.

20. I really wouldn't care that much.

One would be shot only occasionally and the other I'm going to give to my brother (former Marine) as part of a display I'm building for him. The carbine crossed with a real NCO saber over the EGA would make a pretty good gift I think.

3. Not to mention

Guns are suddenly getting CHEAP.

Now the good old AR-15 assault rifle is back, and in "sporting" versions that cost about as much as a premium pistol. You can pick a NATO .556 AR for about $550-700. The days of the $1500 assault rifle are gone, and preppers are stocking up.

7. Not a big Ruger fan myself but ...

I ran across a great deal on a very clean, used .22 Super BearCat that (with the price of ammo being what it is) I couldn't pass it up.

The Ruger factory had an offer to upgrade it with the Transfer Bar Safety system at no cost to me except the shipping to them. So for under $20 and in less than two weeks they reworked the whole action, installed the safety and sent it back, along with all the original parts if I ever want to return it to it's original condition.

28. Ha, I had 5 Model 60's in the closet at one point

Now I'm "down" to only 3 since 2 of my kids "borrowed" them at the range and somehow forgot to give them back.

My SiL has a 10/22 that he loves. But he's spent so much customizing it he could have bought a new Colt AR-15 for what he has in it I think.

I keep running across the cheap Model 60s on the used rack at local stores. The most expensive one was about $75 and 2 of them were only $25 with great stocks and a broken spring or misaligned ejector that took a few minutes to fix. I have trouble passing anything in .22 up with ammo costs what they are.

In the case of the one with the broken spring, a 1973 model complete with squirrels, I sent just the action to Marlin and they totally rebuilt it with new springs all around for $25. Damn $25 gun is a tack driver and then some.

But I have 6 grand kids so far and I tell myself I'm stocking up for them.

Of course if I still lived in Chicago I'd be a felon and they'd be banned as "Assault Weapons" for being semi auto and holding 15 and 18 rounds.

And you'r right, by the time they finish it they could have bought a dedicated 22rim upper for a AR, sometimes several!
I just built 2-22 rimfire uppers for myself and my son, he helped! They use Pro Mag 30rd mags and shoot great! I also have a Ciener kit for 22 rimfire.

I'm an old "walnut and blue steel" kind of guy so I think I'll leave it pretty much as is. I picked up a couple 25 rd mags and I want to get a sling and some swivels and I think that's going to be it for mine.

Although I have been eyeing the M1 carbine lookalike stock kit for it. If I ever did replace the stock, that would be the way I'd go

45. 60's are expensive here.

Usually around $135-140 with surface rust on the barrel, and one shop had an absolutely FILTHY one he wanted $100 for.

Oh, and these are GLENFIELD 60's, not Marlins. I had a Glenfield I bought at K-mart back in '77.

I bought a 10-22, installed a sling, set of Tech-Sights and it's a hunny... I want to build one up for my daughter, so I guess I'd best grab one before the preppers get them all.

14. Depends on the Ruger.

My 12ga Redlabel has been a fantastic shotgun and an absolute bargain. I've been to plenty of charity dove hunts and clay pigeon shoots where everyone who enters with their own shotgun has to leave it out on the tables so that anyone else could have the option to use it for their turn. Levels the field and keeps $10,000 custom clay breakers out of the mix. I'd say my 26" Redlabel get's picked up more than any other... My Mark III Target .22lr pistol is probably the most fun for casual plinking than any other I've used. Have my eyes on a SR1911 too.

...but it's not much of an issue now. And since there are only two parts that really need cleaning I just hose down the bolt and chamber with some fast blast and run a bore snake though it a few times. Gets it 90% as clean and field stripping it and takes less than 5 minutes.

It's a pita. Most center fire models have some kind of take down lever or some such nonsense. My 92fs, p220 and p99c as are simple to field strip and clean. Thats how I like it. Now I will not buy anything that has more than a take down lever on the frame.

I was there getting a new AR lower.

Try buying anything right now, ammo, mags, ect...stuff is selling like crazy what am I supposed to do? Sure I've been pretty active (3 pistols 1 AR) but how am I supposed to finish my AR when all the undeserving people are sucking up all the good parts. I still have one pistol on my must buy list and that's all for 2012.

I do plan on buying some magazines and night sights but nothing major after completing the AR and some full sized auto.

30. Haven't bought one in years.

I might be on the market for a new duty weapon but haven't really made that jump yet. I'm thinking the 1911 is still the way to go but the siren song of that Glock is getting stronger. Yes, we buy our own here. That would mean new holsters, mag pouches, and other stuff. Probably a whole new tool belt since my old one is a bit scruffy looking anyway.

I did buy a holster a couple of weeks ago. Does that count? Haven't had to do that in years, either, because I typically buy good stuff.

All my spending is on hold as I continue to negotiate the purchase of a very nice and gently used Martin D18. It's getting a repair at Martin right now and then will be heading my way for a test run. Apparently Martin will honor a warranty claim from people who have signature models named after them no questions asked. Oh is the price ever right on this one. So my spending is at a halt until the deal is done.
