Man Killed By Grandson After He Shoots Son In Family Dispute

via Talking Points Memo

A North Carolina man was shot to death allegedly by his 11-year-old grandson Monday night after the man shot his son during a family dispute, Raleigh TV station WRAL reported.

Vance County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Kittrell, N.C. at about 7 p.m., according to WRAL. Investigators said Lloyd Woodlief, 84, had shot his 49-year-old son with a .22-caliber pistol. Woodlief was then shot once by his grandson with a 12-gauge shotgun, they said.

Deputies determined that Lloyd Woodlief died a short time after being shot and his son, Lloyd Peyton Woodlief, was taken to a local medical center for treatment.

have to live with the fact he killed his grandfather the rest of his life. Justified or not that is a burden I would not wish on anyone much less a child.

... this eleven-year-old child quite possibly saved his father's life. Note that the original victim -- the dead man's son and presumably the boy's father -- did not die of his wound. Had the grandfather continued to fire, the result may have been quite different.

Yes, this will be a burden for the boy. Witnessing his father's murder would have been a pretty big burden too.

but it seems without the ready availability of guns in the household perhaps this tragedy could have been completely avoided. The father not been shot, the grandfather not killed and the grandson spared what has to be a traumatic experience he will have to live with..

... but there was domestic violence before there were guns. Perhaps the boy would have seen his father bludgeoned or stabbed to death and been helpless to intervene.

we were about the same age as this kid did the same to his drunken step father who was literally beating his mother to death. The POS was in one of his drunken rages and beating the kid's mom when my classmate put an abrupt end to the violence with a hunting rifle. Step dad was an abusive POS who beat my classmate and his mom on a regular basis.
Juvenile court judge ruled it justifiable and sent him to therapy. Had he not had access to a gun, both he and his mother would died a very violent death that day, there is no doubt in my mind.
