Biden warns of ‘political price’ for lawmakers who oppose gun control measures

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-to-claim-progress-in-far-narrower-push-to-stem-gun-violence/2013/06/17/213192b2-d7b6-11e2-a9f2-42ee3912ae0e_singlePage.html

Source: Washington Post

Declaring that “we have not given up,” Vice President Biden on Tuesday warned that lawmakers who opposed the Obama administration’s proposals to stem gun violence “will pay a political price.”

Biden appeared in a White House auditorium to announce that the administration has completed or made significant progress on nearly two dozen smaller-scale executive actions aimed at strengthening existing background checks, improving record-keeping and providing schools and communities with emergency management plans.

The setting was the same, but the political dynamics far different than they were five months ago when President Obama and Biden used the same auditorium to propose the most expansive overhaul of the nation’s gun laws in generations. They hoped to prohibit assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and to require that every gun buyer undergo a background check.

But with their agenda blocked on Capitol Hill, Biden acknowledged that the progress report on the administration’s actions — he said 21 of 23 executive actions rolled out in January have been nearly completed — would not be enough to make serious headway in the fight against gun violence.

Here we go again.
It's my firm belief that if Sen. Feinstein hadn't introduced her poison pill AWB and mag. limit, then UBC would have passed the last time around.
Time will tell if it passes this time around.
Hopefully, it will.

I don't think she's capable of looking beyond trying to establish some kind of legacy for herself. Reid tried to get her to back off a little the last time and she refused.

If it does make it to a floor vote, (doubtful?), the same cast of characters will jump up and try to load every possible personal unrelated bell and whistle amendment on what should be a clean background check bill.

Then they'll all wonder again why they still can't get it passed and just blame the NRA, who we have been frequently informed, is a non-issue, since they are "dead politically and don't know it yet".

altho a bit dated from december 2010, feinstein won hands down over pro gun reid (done by voters in the senator's state):

Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) (approval rating) 50/37 .. +13
Harry Reid (D-NV) ........................44/52 ...... -8

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2010/12/senate-approval-ratings.html

.. it's a blog but the poll is by PPP; two of the 4 dem senators who voted against bg checks last april2013 (again, dated by 2.5 yrs):
Mark Begich (D-AK) 39/47 -8
Max Baucus (D-MT) 38/53 -15

Seems like feinstein is ranked several cuts above, your progun heroes.

prob more to do to the over 50% drop in home values many experienced in NV and the slow years in Vegas and the mass importation of foreign workers both parties fully support.

You had and have at that time lots of people mad at Harry for the financial mess NV was in.

and harry is the definition of a career politician and so is DiFi in my opinion the union would be better if both retired about a decade ago and let new blood into leadership in the dem party. you can almost bet DiFi will vote for corporate interests 100% of the time.

lets not forget it was DiFi and boxer and HArry along with the other oldschool dems that blocked filibuster reform which would had it happened would have allowed BC to pass.

In 2010, Harry Reid was so unpopular that a rock could've been put on the ballot against him and stood an excellent chance of winning, he was extremely lucky that the repubs ran Sharon Angle, the teabagger, against him.
That was the ONLY reason he won, his campaign was overjoyed when Sharon became the R. nominee, anyone else, he would have been defeated.

To this day, I thank Palin for endorsing her.

Is that Feinstein is a democratic senator in a heavily democratic leaning state. The others are democrats in moderately to heavily republican leaning areas. Their popularity or lack thereof has less to do with their stances on potential gun regs than it does with party affiliation.

alabama: The failure in your analysis… Is that Feinstein is a democratic senator in a heavily democratic leaning state. The others are democrats in moderately to heavily republican leaning areas. Their popularity or lack thereof has less to do with their stances on potential gun regs than it does with party affiliation.

Nevada voted 55d/42r 2008 obama, 52d/46r 2012 obama, & of 2010 was 43%dem/35%repub. The (4) other states are indeed as you say;
.. I did not attribute their ratings to the gun issue, tho I did refer to reid, begich & baucus as 'progun' to separate the camps. Your underlying point has merit but not your critique of my analysis being a failure, since they weren't rated on the gun issue, but overall.

what I wrote: .. dec 2010, feinstein won hands down over pro gun reid (voters in senator's state):
Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) (approval) 50/37 .... +13
Harry Reid (D-NV) ..........................44/52 ...... -8
Mark Begich (D-AK) ....39/47 -8
Max Baucus (D-MT) .....38/53 -15
Seems like feinstein is ranked several cuts above, your progun heroes.

Furthermore, the earliest previous senator rating list I could find was from surveyusa january2006 & oct2006, approx 5 full years earlier, & this is how they fared (begich not senator):

Feinstein jan06 52 38 +14 --<two polls>-- 0ct06 57 37 +20
Reid .....jan 59 38 +21 ------ Oct06 49 46 +3
Baucus ...jan 60 32 +28 ------ Oct 06 61 30 +31
http://www.surveyusa.com/50state2006/100ussenatorapproval060126net.htm
PS: Obama ILL .. 72 20 +52

Reid sank in 2006 for some reason, took baucus 5 more years to sink to harry's levels. But Feinstein remained well afloat thru the years. I was rebutting what donP wrote: "Reid tried to get her to back off a little the last time and she refused." DonP made it seem reid was acting on behalf of democratic senators when reid was not, he was talking out the gunnut side of his mouth.

In the 2012 vote, the only 2 counties Pres. Obama won were Clark County, which encompasses Las Vegas and Washoe County, which encompasses Reno, those 2 counties are the most populated in Nevada.
The rest of the counties went to Romney, but because Clark and Washoe voted for Pres. Obama, he won in Nevada.

premium: Nevada is more purple than blue.

So what? I was rebutting what alabamaforobama had written: Feinstein is a democratic senator in a heavily democratic leaning state. The others are democrats in moderately to heavily republican leaning areas.

Oh wait I see, you were helping corroborate what I said to alabamaforobama, that nevada wasn't moderately or heavily republican. Thanks!

And congratulations, sorta, you have posted the very first tapeworm I've seen on DU in my early career here. I measured it approx 6 feet long, an inch longer than I would be if I stood up. That is some tapeworm post you put up there, premium, dunno if it'll stand up to the jury tho, 'over the top' & all, some could even argue cruel & unusual. (No I didn't report it, it's your thread, just if it does)

coke machine will now explain why tapeworm posts are so great compared to word salads.
