NATO PDW's...

Of course they're not called PDW's when I own one.

1. because it is a technical classification

seems it refers to full weapons like the HK MP7 or the P90, guns that are full auto SMG size that use a rifle round.

2. A PDW is a very specific type of weapon

A PDW is a submachine gun which fires a pistol caliber round that is capable of defeating modern soft or hard body armor. The cartridge is a miniaturized rifle round that has a very light yet hardened core and flies at hyper velocity to penetrate kevlar or ceramic plate. A PDW is characterized as having low recoil because the PDW is designed to be used exclusively in full auto. The personal defense weapon concept was designed to allow pilots, vehicle crews, and second line troops such as cooks and mechanics to have a weapon that was more potent than a handgun yet easily stowable and maneuverable.

4. Yep pretty much

Except that the M1 carbine was and is still very popular. Today's PDW concept is starting to fade away. The trend now is having a super short assault rifle firing standard ammunition.

Such as this:

5. With a barrel that short,

how much performance to they actually get from the rifle ammo? I know this is one of the drawbacks from the 14" M-4 barrels.

Seems like they might be better off with a 9mm MP5.

6. Thats the KAC PDW

It uses a new 6x35mm cartridge which is pushing 2400 fps out of a 10 inch and is good out to 300m. The MP5 was legend in its day, but everybody is wearing hard plates now. The reason why they're leaving the 5.7 is because you have to spray your target and score multiple hits to put them down.
