People get so overly focused on the US news they don't follow what's going on internationally.

1. So the US is way, way above the international average.

If you look at the countries above us, you see they are small in population, which means that one or two major shooting events could cause their average to go way up (e.g. Norway). But that is mostly "noise". If you look a large enough region to smooth out the bumps (e.g. Western Europe), then US is far higher.
