Lady Freedom Returns (4,589 posts)
I found this on FB and want to know if this is really happening.
I posted in GD about this and was recommended to post it here to find answers. With such need, the thought that an org, that is suppose to help people doing this turns my stomach. I just want to find out if it is true.

1. Unfortunately the Salvation Army is Not Neutral
|
...on gay rights or gay marriage.
They spend donated money OPPOSING both. The poster you reference is regrettably an accurate reflection of the views of the Salvation Army. Give your money to a charity that has more charity. |

|
I hope if the get any of that 'faith based initiative' money it gets taken back. Eff them!
God, that infuriates me. |

15. On the contrary, it is perfectly legal in many states, including mine.
|
Many states allow people to be fired from their jobs simply for stating that they are gay. It is not illegal.

17. I still wish if they do get any federal tax dollars
|
That they couldn't use it for discrimination. It ought to be yanked. Private discrimination is still sick and wrong but that wouldn't be being paid for by you and me.

24. True
|
....and that should be changed for employers; however, almost all jurisdictions that I am aware of who have nondiscrimination laws based on sexual orientation regrettably make exceptions for religious organizations, like the Salvation Army. Those juridictions need to put political pressure on business who have non discrimination policies to not give the Salvation Army a forum for their bigotry at Christmas time.

3. wiki sez it is true........
|
In 2004, The Salvation Army said they would close operations in New York City unless it was exempted from a municipal ordinance requiring them to offer benefits to gay employees’ partners. The City Council refused to make the exemption. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's administration chose not to enforce the ordinance. The administration right to decline to enforce was upheld by the New York State Court of Appeals in 2006.
from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Salvation_Army#United_States and first sentence in wiki is "The Salvation Army is a Christian denomination and international movement.........". |

excerpt; Practicing homosexuals are "ineligible for full membership" in The Salvation Army. However, The Salvation Army offers its services to all who are in need, regardless of sexual orientation, and opposes the abuse of people based on sexual orientation. The organization also believes Christians who are attracted to the same sex should "embrace celibacy as a way of life. |

16. "Practicing homosexuals" huh?
|
You don't consider it an "abuse of people based on sexual orientation" to deny gay people the right to be members of the Salvation Army?

It isn't clear to me from your post if you are simply reporting or if you agree.

22. yardwork, I totally DISagree with the salvation army. Got it.The OP wanted know if the letter was
|
representative of the creed of the Salvation Army. I looked it up and posted the clip to show that from this it seems that it is true. I am a person who believes in individual civil rights. I do not support what is being said here. I fight against unfair treatment any where I see it.
I didn't have the quotes up on my first post so I see the confusion. |

8. I did as well....
|
When I pass their little bell ringers at the holidays I am always polite but I say, loudly enough for everyone within normal hearing distance to hear, "I don't give to bigoted organizations that pretend to be Christians and discriminate. I suggest everyone else consider boycotting this organization until they read the Bible."
The poor bell ringer is usually caught off guard but so what. |

...with a written comment that says I give to charitable organizations who serve the poor without being homophobic as the Salvation Army is.
Would love to be the fly on the wall when they eventually read. |

11. This is true. I worked for Food for Lane County in the Springfield, OR family dining enter.
|
It was located in the Salvation Army center in that city.
They protested my presence there as a Transgender woman (I had just started homones and don't look as good as I do today). They lost the battle, but they successed in bad vibing me at every turn and making me feel perpetually unloved and unwanted there. |

25. They closed the local Salvation Army
|
in the small(ish) town where my parents lived. The newspaper claimed they lost the lease in the strip mall they were in. Goodwill opened another thrift store soon thereafter.
