My new dog-baby.

Behold Ziggy.

He is a nine month old Border collie I adopted from Petfinder. He was either lost or abandoned by his first owner and was apparently in rough shape when he was picked up by animal control. It was his good fortune that big hearted rescuer pulled him from the pound, and then, lucky me, I adopted him.

What a sweet, smart boy he is! Gets along with the kids and the other dog great. He is a bit of a handful, highly intelligent and energetic, but I knew that when I chose him. He is turning out to be quite the looker too, now that he has gained some weight and his coat is improving. He is doing well in obedience class and is 98% house trained. A bit anxious in the car, but I hope he gets over it as he learns that car rides mean fun walks and obedience class, not the vet or the pound. I wish I had other pictures to post, but he never sits still long enough for me to get one!

1. What a pretty dog and what a great name for him!

My first dog looked a lot like Ziggy, but was redder. Dad named him Foxy because that's what Dad thought it was when he found him out in the woods.

7. Ziggy is adorable!

My current lab was a pseudo-rescue. At eleven months the family decided to sell him. He was a little more expensive than a typical rescue, but they had his AKC papers and all his Vet records for me - all vaccinations and already neutered. They had also done some initial training, but I enrolled him in a class soon after we got him so we could have that bonding with him as well. He is a big boy and quite energetic so I walk him a few times a day and let him run at doggie daycare once a week (he comes home very tired!). If you don't have a big yard, or even if you do, dog parks are also great for a border collie. Like my big lab they need to run. Enjoy him!!

8. It is nice to know your pet's history if you can.

We know nothing about Ziggy's health history, or if there are genetic problems in his line. He seems really healthy, so we are hoping for the best. Our last BC, a beautiful and ethereally sweet little rescue girl, had serous genetic problems that eventually killed her.

We have a big yard for running. We are also members of a dog training club where we do obedience and a bit of agility. His rescuer though he would like to learn to herd sheep, but we are city folk, so that seems like an inconvenient hobby.

9. He is our 3rd rescue -

The first lab was a mix and we had her nearly 10 years - lovely little lab/hound. Second we also got from a rescue group but he only lived 8 months -he was a wonderful gentle lab and my very favorite. I would definitely adopt an older lab again. But when I saw the add for a healthy 11-month old (who I'm guessing was a Christmas puppy) I jumped on it so we will hopefully have him a long time.

We are in the suburbs so I know about adapting - thus the doggie daycare! Sounds like you know exactly what to do with Ziggy

11. White tail tips

We were told, long ago, that dogs with white tail tips are lucky dogs that have the ability to bestow luck on those they live with.

Sure, its an old wives' tale, but we still like to think its true. We've had two such dogs and they were, indeed, very special.

13. Then we are super lucky!

Nearly all our dogs are Border collie or BC mixes, and they all have white tail tips. Even the little brown beagle/chi/dachshund mix had one!

14. He's gorgeous!

It won't be long before you are wondering how he can read your mind. These dogs are quick, both mentally and physically. Good for you for adopting this beautiful fellow. Congratulations!

16. How cute. Similar is some ways to one of my Chihuahuas.

For some reason he reminds of my baby, Laveau...

She is my big girl!

17. I am dying to get an itty bitty dog.

Maybe if I tell my husband it is a cat he won't notice the difference?

18. What gorgeous eyes!

Border collies are great dogs. My sister used to have one, as did my old boss, and our neighbor has one too.

Be aware that there's a good chance he will be very afraid of thunder and lightning. All the BCs I've known have shared this phobia. They have a tendancy to either try to "run away" from the storm if outside (like MILES away) or to "hide" (my sister's would get into the TINIEST places.) A bathtub can make a good "safe haven" for them to run to during a storm-- the theory is that it reduces the amount of static electricity that they feel (thought to be one of the causes of storm anxiety.)

19. He looks splendid!

Welcome home, Ziggy!

I would never have realized he was in a state of improvement if you hadn't said. He's a bit slim, but I'm not so familiar with the weight of a Border Collie, so I would have chalked that up to either his breed or his age. His coat is lovely! I'm surprised that it's not considered up to par. If it's going to improve even more then he'll really have one heck of a fantastic coat!

I know what you mean about it being so difficult to get many photos of him. I'm still finding that really difficult with my pup. I must have at least a hundred pictures of the insides of his nostrils by now!

Congrats on the wonderful new family member!

20. Beautiful Boy!

Reminds me of my neighbor's dog that they rescued from the streets with a broken leg nearly ten years ago. She is so smart and loyal and
very, very appreciative of their kindness.

Ziggy's going to be a joy for you for years to come. That photo just makes me want to scratch him.
