Related: About this forumnewborn kitten question (warning, possibly gross)
So, apparently i can haz newborn kitten squee!
The wife and I are fostering a 3 week old kitten that was found in inner city Las Vegas. He seems to be doing well, eating about half a teaspoon of formula every 4 hours, lots of energy, purrs a lot, all the good stuff.
Well i fed him about an hour ago and stimulated him to get him to urinate and defecate. Urination went well and he managed to poop a bit.
This is where it gets gross. There seems to be a piece of poo stuck in his rectum and it wont come out. The poop was kind of hard so i am wondering if he's getting enough hydration. Should i try stimulating him again to get the rest of it to come out or just wait until the next feeding session?
He doesn't seem to be in any pain and he's presently sawing logs on his heated blanket. He goes into insta-purr mode when i touch him.
Am i being overly cautious?

(69,014 posts)Probably right about hydration.
Take a glycerin suppository and cut out a teeny tiny sliver and shove it up cutie's ass. Put him back on heated blanket. Then rub his tiny tummy and start working it out.
If no suppository, use canola or other mild cooking oil, put it in a dropper, and put it at the edge of the anus and squeeze some up there. Put him back on heated blanket. Rub tummy and help him work it out.
I will try it!

(1,638 posts)He complained a lot, but a LOT came out, followed by some of the most deadliest, paint stripping farts known to man. i was beginning to wonder if he's been plugged up for a few days.
he's out like a light!

Due to Secret Rule Elebenty Bleen, cat pictures are required on a cat thread, especially if said kitteh is a really really cute bebeh.

(17,276 posts)he can begin eating wet cat food mixed with kitten formula. You can even put out some moistened dry food. He won't have the teeth for dry kibble until about six weeks old.
Have fun with him! And be on the alert for signs of parasites, like the other poster said: diarrhea, especially with streaks of mucus or blood in it, and going outside the box. It usually goes along with a huge appetite, because food runs through them too fast to be properly assimilated and nourishing.
Are you fostering for a shelter? If so, they will be able to give you help.

(1,638 posts)He is doing just fine! lots of energy and a good appetite. It seems he might have been plugged up a bit the night i posted this. His movements are much more consistent now. The vet gave him a clean bill of health!
We named him Panda

You're such a good cat momma so far, so you're not being overcautious.
Unless someone else adopts him he could become your new furbaby!
