Pets Might Soon Become a Staple in the Workplace

Wonder if they allow kitties too.

It’s becoming more common to see animals roaming the halls of companies, sitting under work desks or nestled in the laps of employees. And it looks as though this trend is here to stay after a new study revealed that employees who bring their dogs to work are less stressed and show greater signs of job satisfaction.

A 2012 study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management investigated the stress levels and organizational perceptions of pet dogs in the workplace. The study was designed to measure the scores of 75 participants who were broken into two group—employees who brought their dogs to work and employees who did not—in the areas of physiology and perceived stress, perception of job satisfaction, organizational affective commitment and perceived organizational support.

During the weeklong study, scientists measured participants' stress hormone level, or cortisol, as well having each participant complete a survey regarding their stress levels four times a day, according to the study.

Pets at work are a lure in companies that have to offer lots of perks to get young talent. I worked for a business that let us bring our dogs to the corporate offices back in the 90's. They scaled that back a few years ago because people are lining up for jobs and no one really wants to deal with the liability of dog bites or fights.

There are plenty of exceptions but they are rarely large companies. Eventually there is going to be a negative incident and that ends up superseding years of positive.

I crate them during work hours, let them out when the kids (I'm a speech therapist) are gone at the end of the day. The kids love seeing them, and the dogs (Abby & Jack) love being close by.

I used to work for a small company where the owner had 3 poodles. He used to bring them into the office every day he was there. His partner also brought in her beagle; another employee had a very cool mutt who would wonder around and say hello, and another had a collie. On any given day, there could be 6 dogs wandering here and there. I loved it! Alas, they sold the company, and that was the end of that. Never got to bring in my dogs, though.

I work for a big company now, and that will never happen here.
