They need our help! *PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY*
Very recently, PetFlow.com had the opportunity to work with HB's for Care Packages, a not-for-profit organization that sends care packages to hero dogs serving in the military. These hardworking dogs at war are called Military Working Dogs, also knows as MWDs. Military War Dogs are trained to detect explosives, making them extremely valuable to soldiers in Afghanistan. German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois breeds are particularly adept at sniffing out bombs, so they're used to patrol secure installations and search both entry and check points. US Military War Dogs have a 98% accuracy rate when it comes to detecting bombs, and they have helped save the lives of many of our soldiers. Dogs also serve another very important purpose. Some military dogs are therapy dogs, who serve by doing what our dogs do best at home - providing tons of love and slobbery kisses to soldiers that are feeling down. And we all know that there's no better pick-me-up than a wet lick from a dog!
There are currently about 600 military dogs serving in Afghanistan and Iraq! Pictured below are two working dogs, Sonja (first picture) and Edo (2nd picture) that received care packages from PetFlow.com. We want to send them and other dogs even more gifts, but we need your help! Listed below are items that HB's for Care Packages has asked us to send, please pick items from this list. You can pick as little or as much as you want, and place your order to be sent to the following address:

On behalf of all of us at PetFlow, and the Military Dogs working abroad, we thank you for your contributions!
Please share this email with friends and family so that we can send as much as possible!
From all of us at PetFlow,
Love your pets!

(18,219 posts)This sounds like a worthwhile cause, even though I think that the military should be doing this for the dogs instead of requiring donations from us. They should be able to scrape up the money.
Thanks for posting, because these dogs are doing incredible work.

(13,661 posts)but alas, use 'em and toss 'em away seems to be the way our military does things. I just see red when I see commercials asking for money to help our veterans - they're veterans, dammit, and should not have to go begging for anything! Grrr!
Hey, Curmudgeoness Scritches to Sammy.

(18,219 posts)Had a vet appointment to have his anal glands drained....has to have it done every 6 weeks or so. He hates it, and I can't blame him. But he will get over it.....probably when I go to bed. It is chilly tonight.

(13,661 posts)is between 65-80; that's what comes from growing up in a temperate climate, I guess.
Sammy a happier boy today? I'd probably be grumpy if I'd just had my anal glands drained, too.

(18,219 posts)Just as I suspected, he was ready to snuggle up in bed. And he is curled up with me now. I picked a defective cat as far as health problems, but he is a keeper!

(6,151 posts)A fabulous non-profit which has seen growing pains, as you might know, and is under attack by a predatory outfit called FoodStampsforPets, which established that domain name later and has since been trying to strongarm the legitimate charity into paying it to go away. You can see the whole deal on the FB page for PetFoodStamps.org.
Anyway, PFS got deluged by somewhere close to half a million applicants so far. All a person needs to qualify is to be on some kind of government assistance, i.e. low income. PFS expects to begin regular shipments of pet food through PetFlow around Labor Day, those in dire need (expecting to have to give up their pets in 30 days) of course being served first. But it should be in full swing by September. I've seen incredibly unrealistic requests on their page such as help me feed my 30 feral cats and such, but from what I've read many people seem to be responsible and reasonable pet owners who just fell on hard times.
They're also starting a PetSocialNetwork.org in September as an interface between pet owners and those who wish to make donations. This is intended to also generate operating funds by selling pet related ads and will serve as a national clearinghouse for adoption services. So it's looking really good. They've moved into larger offices in NYC which will be a much better location for them.
A person may or may not agree with the openly expressed personal politics of the group's founder Marc Okon, but when it comes to keeping pet families together and well fed, I say politics be damned. Something you won't hear from me very often!
Not trying to hijack this thread. I seldom start one on my own. But the mention of PetFlow, I thought, hopefully excused a slight segue. If someone thinks I should make this reply a whole new thread, I will - but I originally planned to wait until the PFS program was fully operational. Some people are unaware of the startup problems such a huge enterprise can experience, and some people are so desperate right now that I don't want to stir up hopes prematurely.

(13,661 posts)I need to send your update to my friend, who applied to pet food stamps but got nowhere (probably lost in the deluge of half a million applicants...)
I do think you should make this a new thread, both here in Pets and in the Lounge...
Do you know when they hope to be fully operational?
Edit: Duh - just reread your post and saw the comment about hoping to start around Labor Day...

(6,151 posts)Just tell your friend to hang on awhile. New York's non-profit verification is not handed out lightly, and that has already been accomplished. I believe they're completely legit despite certain political and personal differences I might have with the founder. It must be trying to be called every name in the book by naysayers with subterranean motives, and I can overlook his occasional testiness. He's probably being nicer than I would be under the same circumstances.
Just remind your friend that he/she should let the organization know when first applying that their need is dire if this is the case. That should move them at least closer to the head of a very, very long line. PFS is also looking to open direct distribution centers around the country, as their original plan of mail order delivery unfolds. I've visited the PetFlow page, and they carry only the best brands. Accepted recipients have to open an account on PFS when duly registered, and they have the opportunity to make their information public but are not required to do so. The pets' page does require photos and a short description for donors to peruse. When PSN is operational, again shortly after Labor Day, the recipient will be expected to maintain a certain level of communication there since this is where the most future operational funds will be generated - but again, I'm sure steps will be taken to maintain their privacy. No one in his right mind these days advertises exact location or even actual name, in my opinion. If you're at Marc Okon's level I suppose you can afford to release your real name, but most of us really can't. It should be enough that the organization itself knows who and where you are, not the general public. They've even said that recipients w/o access to a computer are excused from participating in PSN. A lot of people here don't have computers or internet, and our rural library might not be rare in their refusal to allow email or uploads of any kind.
Again, I'll keep an eye on the PFS web page and do a separate thread at the opportune time. But it wouldn't hurt your friend to apply now. Or anyone else for that matter.
Flaxbee
(13,661 posts)Whatever, if this system works and allows people to keep their pets in loving, safe homes, I don't care about his personality.
My friend did apply way back when it first launched, and I don't think she's heard anything since. I sent her the information you provided in your first post, so hopefully she'll circle back around with them soon. She has a computer for email and Internet but isn't really equipped to upload photos ... and she lives in a very rural area a state away so I can't help with her set up (but if she can send me photos, I can upload them for her). She doesn't even get $800/month and while her immediate situation isn't dire, she's over 60, isn't going to work again because of disability, and PFS would certainly help her feed herself a little bit better... and keep her cats and birds healthy, too.
