Happy Honey shots

You all may remember I got Honey from a local shelter back in January, after she was rescued by the side of a road in NM, almost starved to death and nursing 8 puppies. We think she might have been a res dog who probably got pregnant the first time she went into heat. She seems very young.

We had oodles of problems with her at first. She was incredibly hyper-vigilant during the night, hounded (pun intended) our cats mercilessly, stole food and went in the trash any second we turned our backs, was terrified to get in the car, and, when we started our veggie gardens, she dug through them trying to dig up the compost (to eat, presumably). It's taken her all this time to get the hang of being a pet. Best of all, she's actually relaxed enough to smile now! The day she first smiled - about 2 weeks ago - was a happy day at our casa!

So I wanted to share some photos of our happy, smiling, adjusting-nicely girl.

Here she is, our own little flower child:

Just digging the fine weather, lying out in her very own yard:

Smirking in her sleep, content on the couch:

*Edited to add: Holy crap, that's a lot of dog hair on my couch!

You did a great job! She looks wonderful and best of all happy. Hard work and lots of patience and you have saved a wonderful soul who had nothing to look forward to. I hope you take that to heart and add it to your own joy of seeing how she has flourished.

What good is a couch not full of dogs and kitties and lots of hair? My guests may not like it but I would have it no other way.

she is the picture of love and happiness! I know you have had your problems getting her to adjust to life in your home, but it sounds like things are getting much better now. She is beautiful, poor thing.

And what do we keep covers on our couch for if it is not to collect all that pet hair!?!?!?!

where the dogs can run off leash. Because of my work schedule we can go at odd times when very few people are around (though as far as I can tell, not a lot of people use the park anyway). I found with my other rescue, Bear, that the ability for him to run wild in a wild space (not a small, neighborhood dog run) really helped him with his anxiety. I think most rescues are traumatized in some way and running helps them process it, like exercise can help people. That first shot was taken in a split second between her running as breakneck speed toward me, then turning on a dime to stop and pose for me here, before dashing off again to run through the water and jump over logs.
