Food Network Star went crappy so I hit delete...

Thank goodness for the dvr. The minute I saw Guy Fieri, I fast forwarded. Then I saw him through out the end so I just deleted. Ruined a perfectly good show.

As for the finalists, I think they set this up for the Italian guy to win and start doing shows with Giada.

I can't stand the guy. The Food Network has totally gone to hell. 99% of the programming is either "Chopped" or something with Guy Fieri. The Italian guy is pretty much the cream of the crop for the current bunch of "stars" and that's not saying much.

as far as the Italian guy. There really weren't any stand outs this time.

I'm not sure why they use Guy so much on anything. He's annoying as hell.

because it seemed like they are all either travelogues or challenge/competition shows. What's so "bad" about how-to shows? That's all I care about, other than also vegetarian cuisine (something else that's missing from such networks.)

So, when I watch cooking shows at all, I go to PBS' CreateTV. They have good cooking shows with plenty that are simply "how to"

Food.network.gameshows.com is all about promoting the same 10 personalities, and not about food.

I do like the concept of "Diners/drive-ins/dives", but I can't stand it's front-man.

I'm with you Kentauros, I go to CreateTV too, now. No-nonsense cooking shows, and - if you want - how to garden, too.

but for at least one of them they didn't produce their own shows, or put any of their own money into creating new shows. That was all on the person who wanted to have a show on the network/channel. I seem to recall a figure of $40,000 up front and a promise of a certain number of shows, all funded and produced by the person wanting their show on TV. I'm guessing that they then got paid back when the shows aired, depending on how good the ratings were.

And as we've seen on American cable TV, the highest-rated shows are reality-tv. What we have now on these cooking channels is the result of people gaming the system for the most bucks, not for quality. You still have to go to PBS for that.

I think I was even watching a sewing show one time on CreateTV even though I don't have a sewing machine (do know how to use one, however.) Most of their shows are fun and informative

I never got to the Guy Fieri stage, I'd already shut it off because they were spending too much time on broadcasting chops and too little on the food.

Julia Child's first few shows were clunky and weird but the woman cook cook and she taught me how to do it. I will always be a hell of a lot less impressed with "personality" and "professional on air persona" than I will be with the ability to do what's being advertised.

When they did get someone who could do it all (remember Aarti?), they put the show into a really stupid time slot, early morning, and then everybody wondered why she didn't get huge ratings. She should have been on in prime time.

So they lost me long before Guy Fieri (the loudmouth with hair like a scrub brush who's constantly stuffing his face with greasy diner food, right?) came on the scene.
