I just made hot chocolate with almond soy milk...

Last edited Sat Dec 29, 2012, 12:18 AM - Edit history (1)

and blecch. The soy milk itself tasted OK, but when it all got heated and mixed it really sucked. Not undrinkable, but not deeply pleasurable like hot chocolate is supposed to be.

Made it my usual way-- about two cups of soy stuff, a couple of galumphs of cocoa powder, a dollop of corn syrup (helps the cocoa powder dissolve) a blip of vanilla extract and sweetener (Stevia) to taste.

Any suggestions?

On edit...

Read the package again and it's actually almond milk, not almond soy.

1. Use butter instead of corn syrup. My grandmother taught me how to make cocoa

the old fashioned way.

3. Butter? Fascinating...

butter and chocolate-- sounds positively orgasmic.

Be back shortly.

5. Yup. You put the cocoa in the bottom of a pot. Turn heat on med. Add enough

butter to turn the cocoa into a paste with a wisk. Add milk and sugar to taste.

6. I just did it a little differently...

Threw everything into this automatic hot chocolate gadget I have. (Used regular milk this time, too.)

But, the butter worked and the hot chocolate is excellent.

Thanks for the tip.

11. Hey, this is diet food...

1% milk, no-cal sweetener, and almost zero calories in th chocolate powder, vanilla, and whatever else.

Oh, yeah, butter-- but only a pat. One little pat. (OK, maybe two.) And the optional baby marshmallows.

You could starve to death on this stuff unless you fall for the whipped cream on top.

2. I think it works better with rice or almond milk

soy milk just tends to get weird when it's heated with stuff.

7. Just reread the container and it is almond milk...

not almond soy.

Doesn't taste all that much like almonds, though.

8. I just discovered that this crap isn't any good in coffee, either...

by ruining my first cup with it.

So, now I have most of the half gallon still sitting in the fridge. I might do some baking before it goes bad. Or, I might just drink the stuff-- it's not bad ice cold by itself.
