index it and I do not know if I have the right equipment they would need.

and since my ancient patched together PC runs it fine, you should have little problem.

I'm working on the Iowa 1895 state census while I wait for 1940 to be released. I tried Ancestry first, but I didn't like how little of the records they would share for free to the public, so now I use FamilySearch which seems to release more.

Ancestry.com is great if you can afford the membership. I keep my main tree there still, so others can use it, and I can also still enter in information. But I use familysearch.com for records. I have done some indexing there, as well.

You can get some practice with indexing other sorts of databases if you download it and get to work here:

https://www.familysearch.org/volunteer/indexing

I do it in my spare moments during the day and in bigger blocks of time on weekends. You can spend as much or as little time on it as you like, though your batches expire if you don't finish them in the alotted time.

I am VERY excited about this coming out, and with so many genealogists with computer access now, it seems to me that this process of indexing the census could go quite quickly!

I've indexed a lot of records for FamilySearch and know how much fun and how challenging it can be. I'm so excited by the 1940 Census because for the first time it includes lots of people I know or knew IRL.

I've been waiting for this census for two years! Like others here, there are people I know/have known who will be listed.

Just signed up to help index.

For anyone who has signed up to index the census, have you heard anything back?

I signed up the other day but haven't gotten a reply or anything. Do you have to download the software first before you do get a reply?

thanks!
