‘Who Do You Think You Are’ Heads to TLC

After being cancelled by NBC a year ago, “Who Do You Think You Are” is finding life again on TLC.

The cabler has ordered eight hourlong episodes of the family history reality skein and will begin bowing the segs on July 23. Fresh run on cable will include celebs like Christina Applegate, Cindy Crawford, Zooey Dechanel and Chris O’Donnell delving into their lineage with the help of ancestry and history experts.

Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky direct and exec produce the series.

“I’ve never stopped hearing about how much people love ‘Who Do You Think You Are?,’ and I’ve always known that we’ve had more great stories to share,” said Kudrow.

3. I'm really pleased - it always gets me back on track with my stuff

Not that they show resources that I don't know about, but it inspires me to get back to my genealogy.

2. YAY!

I loved that show... now TLC... most of the rest of the shows on that channel are train wrecks, but I'm really happy they picked up this one!

5. I loved that show

and the one on PBS, "Finding Your Roots" with Henry Louis Gates.

6. Yes, I like both

"Finding Your Roots" had people with more interesting histories. "Who Do You Think You Are" relied on celebrities and I expect TLC will give us even more superficial characters. But it's still interesting seeing their family histories and the research approach.

7. My favorite on "Who Do You Think You Are"

was Martin Sheen. His family history was very interesting and he was far more intelligent and insightful than most of the celebrities they featured. He actually had more to say than "Wow" or "Oh my god". The stories of his two uncles, Irish and Spanish political prisoners, would make a fascinating novel or movie.

8. I only saw the beginning of that episode

Not sure what happened - I could have fallen asleep during it. I remember the part about his ancestor having all the children with his mistress and her coming forward to have them baptized after his death.

I need to hunt for the whole series since I missed most of the first season!

I hope TLC bought the rights to re-run the series as well as make new episodes. The way cable channels run things over and over and over, I could watch the whole thing as many times as I like.

9. It is definitely one I would watch again

Seems that political activism ran in Sheen's family on both his mother and father's side. Both his parents had brothers who ended up in prison and Sheen visited the now abandoned prisons in Ireland and Spain.

That would be great if TLC bought the rights to the re-runs. I was hoping that Netflix or Amazon had it for streaming, but so far it is only on disc.

10. Maybe "Finding Your Roots" with Henry Louis Gates

will come back next season, or soon.

I was in Jamestown VA (the historical site) last Sept. and Mr. Gates was filming a segment regarding the archaeological digs there. I believe it may have had to do with possible slaves who might have lived & died there. They weren't encouraging visitors to hang around the filming, but he realized that I recognized him, and spoke a few words to me when the filming had finished.

Naturally, I'd like to see what they produced there.

11. That sounds interesting

I can't find anything recent about any upcoming PBS projects for Mr. Gates, but with PBS, there is always a reasonable chance that there will be more episodes. They don't have the same limitation and constraints as commercial television.

That is so nice that you got to speak with him in Virginia.
