Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Very, very unhappy with recent quality of Netflix DVDs - anyone else having problems?

Over the last two weeks, spanning 6 DVDs, we've had 3 visibly damaged (as in cracked and unplayable) and one that was so scratched that it was impossible to view more than the first 10 minutes. I called them last week, got all of the "sincere apologies" and extra discs...of which two were damaged. So I am going to call again tomorrow -

just wondering if they are having quality control issues that are widespread......

We've dropped them once before, and may be about to do it again! (not that our little two disc at a time subscription will ever be more than a microblip on their radar)....but if this is indeed a trend???

1. About a month ago I got a disc that was cracked

and wouldn't play. I sent it back and the replacement was broken into 4 or 5 pieces. But since then, they've all been fine.

2. the oddest one was a cracked one returned was returned to us cracked...

the exact same disc! I wonder if the local distribution hub is having some issues.
It could just one of those random things - we are in a bad stretch. But 4 unplayable out of 6 discs is a bit much!

3. I've noticed the same. Only had one cracked one a few months ago but many now are worn

and tired.

4. I wonder if they are trying to push people to the streaming feature -

which would be fine except the selection is relatively pathetic, when compared to the DVD selection.

9. That may be so but I keep both services just because I love the old classics that aren't streamed.

I used to annually order the Grapes of Wrath and the Greatest Show on Earth from Netflix yet it hasn't been available for the last couple of years.

Going to have to buy them outright now that this reminded me~!

5. Whenever I get a bad disc I take a permanent marker to it/ditto to the pkg.

Unplayable-damaged disk, that sort of thing.

7. Yep. same problem.

I get 4 at a time.
Have noticed sincle last spring that more discs are unplayable because of obvious cracks, one was in 2 pieces in the envelope. Much more frequent than it used to be.
Also have noticed that some discs will not play at all in my computer, altho I use VLC player, one of the best for dificult discs.
Have cleaned the player, to no avail.
Netflix says that this is the studio's problem, it is their anti-piracy coding which makes some discs freeze in the puter.

11. For the real masochist:

Try Hulu. Their operating system is an exercise in frustration, with barely operable scrolling and selection. I tried five times to watch a classic French film, only to have the system inform me (at the end of the credits) that it was going to show me a few commercials, whereupon I was treated to a viewing of some medical soap opera-type TV program...every single time that I tried to view the movie. To add to my annoyance, the rejected TV series would ALWAYS be playing in the upper left corner every time I logged on. Their film choices are appalling: straight-to-video dreck, Bollywood musicals and films that you might see after the late-late show. With more commercials. When I sent an e-mail asking for help with the problem of the French film, they sent me a reply with pointless instructions on changing my settings. When I finally located that part of Hulu, I simply cancelled my subscription.
Problem solved.
At least Netflix works.

14. We had two cracked in a row and changed our membership to streaming only...

It was too much of a hassle with the DVD's.

15. I have the two disc plan also,(along with streaming) and can't believe they do any visual check...

on the returns. ANd the cracked discs usually seem to be the one that I was really looking to see!
