Brussels sprouts 'overdose' hospitalised man at Christmas, report reveals (BBC)

A man from Ayrshire had to be hospitalised after eating too many Brussels sprouts last Christmas, it has emerged.

The traditional Christmas vegetable contain lots of vitamin K which promotes blood clotting.

However, this counteracted the effect of anticoagulants the man was taking because he had a mechanical heart.

Doctors at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank eventually realised too many sprouts were to blame.

The case was reported in a festive edition of the Medical Journal of Australia.

7. Yes. I hated them when I was a kid, thought I'd give them another chance.

Tried roasting them. Still hate 'em.

11. Trim, cut in half, saute a tad in some olive oil along with a little sliced garlic, add a little

water to the pan and cover, let braise several minutes until tender, finish with a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Manna from heaven! You don't know what you're missing.

10. Perish the thought. I grow them, and they are delicious.

They are great after a frost. Try roasting them with a little garlic butter and olive oil.

5. It is indeed a traditional part of Christmas dinner in the UK

I like Brussels sprouts myself, though not to the point of overdosing on them; but I am sure that veggie-o-phobic kids will be using this story as ammunition: 'But eating too many greens is DANGEROUS!'

12. I'm with the one Brussel sprout is already too

many group. They really stink up the house when cooked. My mother adored them and always fixed them at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and as far as I know, not a single one of us six kids ever eat them.

Meanwhile, the article seems to leave unanswered at least two vital questions: 1. How many did he eat?
2. Had he been warned to limit his consumption of certain foods, like Brussels sprouts?

13. Hating Brussels sprouts might be a genetic trait.

https://www.23andme.com/health/Bitter-Taste-Perception/

Those of us that find them bitter and unpleasant evidently carry a gene that is responsible for tasting bitterness. If you don't have that gene, Brussels sprouts and similar vegetables don't taste so nasty.

17. Good to know that it was because of his medical condition

My husband doesn't like them so sometimes I heat up a frozen bag of them for myself and end up eating several servings of them at once. I'd be worried if I could overdose on them.
