Beach volleyball at the London Olympics: What happened to their bikinis?

In a "world turned upside-down" week, it was a male athlete creating a stir for his skimpy practice uniform: Tim Tebow, shedding his rain-soaked T-shirt to jog in from practice, in a move more befitting the screenwriters of a Daniel Craig movie.

Meanwhile, over in London, it is the women athletes who are breaking the hearts of men everywhere by putting clothes on, not taking them off.

We've become so acclimated to the sight of America's reigning beach volleyball twosome playing in skimpy bikinis that we momentarily thought we were watching a different sport the other day.

4. ROFL.

The men wear a comfortable, loose, basketball-like uniform and the women looked like they're dressed for sunbathing. It's so absurd.

7. I've read the men are having their choices restricted, too

They aren't allowed to wear their bikini bottoms in London. Many wear those or compression shorts. I guess the IOC doesn't want viewers to have to see the guys' packages. Ridiculous.

The IOC is notorious for being extremely sexist towards female athletes, and not only in uniform restrictions (ie no female ski jumping because their uteri will fall out :wtf.

10. Ugh. So we must be protected from men's packages

but women's arse cheeks are prime time ready.

It's really a stupid double standard.

3. They can wear what they want

Some of the female beachers wear tanks and compression shorts, some bikinis. Missy and Kerry usually wear bikini bottoms and either a rashguard or a sleeveless shirt.

They wear the leggings when they're cold.

5. I played 2 person volleyball for a number of years in Florida. The less clothes the better

A couple of things you find out when you play 2-person volleyball in the hot sun for 4-6 hours a day.

1. All beverages other than water are bad. You would think that gatorade/powerade or any of the sports drinks would be good for this situation. They are not. I cannot tell you medically why this is, but virtually everyone playing had the same experience. We all tried gatorade during our workouts but it does something bad to your body after 4-5 hours in the sun running around in the sand.

2. You want as little clothing on as possible. Not only does it make you hot and sticky, running around that much for so long in the heat and diving around in the sand, it chafes.

The other thing is, once you get used to something, a particular hat, or whatever kind of clothing, any change makes you uncomfortable and that is the last thing you want to be thinking about during a game.

6. I read something about this on the Beeb the other day

I know from personally experience that sometimes wearing the least amount is the most comfy while exercising, and I know from experience that compression shorts are very comfortable to run in, and don't give wedgies or anything, and split running shorts look goofy, but when it's humid and hot, they are a god send. A friend who is a sponsored marathon and ultra runner wears the bumhugger shorts in marathons and training, and says they are THE most comfortable things to run in. Bodyglide only helps so much with chafing.

Also: if you go out and do a 15-mile run on a hot, humid day, you need electrolytes, but Gatorade would make me puke. REAL Gatorade wasn't a sugary drink. I drink water and will eat some salty food while running, and that's fine for me. HEED or something won;t make you sick like Gatorade, and HEED also tastes icky, like original Gatorade did.

Oh: I read Misty and Kerri have total say in what they wear and train with. I have specific running clothes I like to wear for specific things, and get all twitchy when I can't wear what want.

8. Kerri and Misty are my favorite Olympians

I love volleyball and they are amazing to me. When I left FL and went to NY in 2003, that pretty much ended my sand volleyball days. I now play in 6 person leagues in the city and with age, well, the skills dont get any better lets put it that way . Here is a video from one of my teams matches in 2010. My team is in blue.
