Chile: Possible Reform Sheds Light on Illegal Abortions

SANTIAGO, Chile – As Chilean President Michelle Bachelet’s ruling center-left coalition has introduced the discussion of a new abortion law and aims to change the existing one on the books, the darkness of illegal abortions in the socially conservative South American country has come to light.

Earlier this year, Bachelet, while in the nascent weeks of her second four-year presidential term, disclosed that her New Majority coalition intends to present a bill in the second half of 2014 that would seek to decriminalize abortion in certain instances...

...Under the New Majority’s proposal, these reasons would include danger to the life of the mother, fetal viability (likelihood of the baby’s survival after birth) and in cases of rape.

“Chile is one of only five nations in the entire world where abortion in any instance, no matter how vital it may be, is completely criminalized. Chile is a mature and democratic society, and a mature and democratic society need not fear any kind of debate on this topic, and I think that this is the moment to have this debate,” said Bachelet in May....
