We need to band together and convince the Admins to regard sexism and misogyny as just as unacceptable as racism and homophobia. It's fantastic that the LGBT group has made the progress they have towards convincing TPTB that homophobic comments are vile and should be a bannable offense and I sincerely believe if the feminists of DU, united, make it clear that sexist language, slurs, etc. should be unacceptable, we can achieve a similar level of success.
Right now, the discussion is, as it's been for years, about whether asinine rationalizations make misogyny ok and whether dislike of misogyny is the result of being a frail old woman who's shocked by dirty language. It's clear that the discussion isn't going to change before that happens--if it were, it would have already. Once some people start getting TOS'd for using terms for female genitalia as insults or making allusions to the idea that not having male genitalia makes a person defective, the discussion will finally change to why that kind of language shouldn't be acceptable.
The problem of sexism on DU is real and needs to end. Let's make it a goal to put an end to it.

(6,272 posts)The misogynistic posts that get alerted go to juries and then they are allowed (at least if I am reading those posts in meta correctly) ....how do we get past the juries?

(14,860 posts)These aren't in any particular order, they should be done concurrently.
-Alert. By always alerting, the problem becomes more visible as more DUers are called on to jury sexist and misogynist posts. If a juror comments that adjudicating a sexist post is a waste of time, makes more sexist comments, or attacks you for alerting, alert on the results message. This will send it on to the admins.
-Always tick the TOS box when alerting on sexist and misogynist posts, that way when the jury votes to let it stand, it still goes to the admins and they'll start to see the scope of the problem.
-Confront the poster. Not everyone who uses sexist language is doing so maliciously, and "teachable moments" do exist. Maybe suggest that the post be edited or self-deleted. The important thing is to stay polite because when we lose our cool, we're more likely to have our posts hidden and get locked out of the thread.
-We need to get a ton of people on board and petition the admins to strictly enforce the close-to-zero tolerance policy on TOS violations that's been promised, especially when it comes to sexism and misogyny. By alerting with the TOS box, they won't be able to deny the problem or say that it's already being enforced.
-Something group hosts (especially lead hosts) can do is make it clear that sexist language won't be tolerated in the group (pinned and locked threads like this one are a way to do that) and block people who can't bring themselves to not verbally abuse women. If the blocked posters raise a big stink about it, they're helping increase visibility.
I understand the desire of the admins to be more hands-off with DU3, but it's still their site and they're still responsible for what's allowed here so by making as much noise as possible, we can force them to take a clear stand. We're bound to ruffle some feathers, but we'll effect some positive changes.
