S.C. advocacy group, ACLU launching same-sex marriage effort

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A group in South Carolina is teaming up with the American Civil Liberties Union to explore legal options for same-sex couples.

SC Equality, a statewide LGBT advocacy group, said Wednesday it was launching a “Post-DOMA Litigation Task Force.”

Organizers say the all-volunteer effort will take a look at what options are available to same-sex couples who live in South Carolina and have a legal marriage from another state.

Same-sex marriages are currently legal in 13 states and Washington, D.C. Several other states allow unions or domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples.

Wow -- good luck to them but they surely have a mountain to climb, as do all GLBTs south of the Mason-Dixon line.

National & local organizations are diverting monies from Florida to other States (that has me pissed!) I don't care what anyone says if it's a losing battle or not, no one gets left behind. What this has done though I am sure many LGBT in Florida are thinking the same Where do I divert my money now.

If you have limited funds and resources and spread them too thin, you reduce your chances of winning battles in the ongoing war. Too many fronts, as it were. Conversely, if you focus on one or two targets at a time and win those, you'll eventually reduce the field of battle and isolate the remaining targets. Hell, I live in West Virginia. Do you think any of the major rights organizations care a whit about what's happening here? We're not even on the radar.
In the meanwhile, my partner and I contribute to local candidates who support GLBT equality (there aren't many around these parts!); we also support like candidates in other states via organizations such as Emily's List. (We do NOT make blanket contributions to the Dem Party nationally.) One of my partner's favorite charities and for which she has held fundraisers is The Point Foundation, which provides college scholarships to disadvantaged GLBT youth. We need to groom the leaders of tomorrow and put them in position to challenge the status quo.
Unless the federal government steps in like it did with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, I sincerely doubt that my partner and I will live to see the day when GLBTs achieve equality in all 50 states. But we've got to keep battling and you just have to choose what you believe will help all GLBTs get to the top of that mountain, even if we may never see that day for ourselves.

& have them all go to the Supreme Court or at the very least, a class action suit. This is what I believ it's going to take to get recognized in all 50 States.

That comprises FL, AL and MS. One of the most conservative of all circuit courts. The thought is that the bucks will go to a more sympathetic district to bring a case which would have precedent in all regions. That's the thought anyway. It gets harder and harder to send HRC and Lambda Legal money that I know is not going to be used here.

The reality is that my husband and I are giving it 18-24 months. I am planning on retiring in 2015. And if things stay as they are now in FL, we will be moving back to NY. It's just a headache I don't need.
