The order was founded in New Orleans by free women of color in the mid 1800s. At that time it was very common for wealthy white men to keep young women of mixed race under contract as mistresses and to have children with them. Sometimes it went okay and sometimes very badly. When (I think I have her name right) Henrietta DeLisle decided to try to found an order for young women who didn't want to be a part of this, or for offspring of this arrangement, she called it Holy Family because as she saw it the most blessed family in Christianity was a woman and child with a father who wouldn't marry her.

At least that's the way I heard it.

I mean, I just thought about it this way now, but he is his own father. They're both supposedly the same god, right? That means he totally impregnated his own mother. I would say "rape", but I guess I don't really understand the finer points between rape and impregnating a woman without her permission.

Suggesting that she was raped is getting old; I think that nasty comment has been around since Roman times!
