My Ten Thousandth Post

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to say for this occasion and where I wanted to post it. DU doesn't have many milestones, except maybe finally having enough posts to start your own thread. (Is that even still around on DU3?) It wasn't easy narrowing down my aimless rambling into something coherent and presentable--believe me. Truth be told, even after deciding what to write, I paused here for about six minutes and got very distracted. It'll be a miracle if I say anything of value at this point and I should just stop, but where's the fun in that?

Ok, I'll be serious for moment.

There we go, all set. Glad I got that out of the way.

Ok, no really. Serious.

* * *

I found DU back around 2005 while looking for reliable news websites. I floated around and checked in and out for almost a year. The '06 primaries inspired me to make an account. I didn't even locate the LGBT Group for weeks or months after that--tucked all the way down there with the post counter that didn't really work. How much DU has changed, in these last few years. From Bu$h to Obama. From Pelosi to Boehner. Bubble bursts and bailouts. Katrina and the tsunami. DADT and DOMA Section 2. 3D multi-variable quantum chess from known unknowns.

Sometimes we take for granted all of the opportunities that DU has given us over the years. Sure, we remember the fights--the Great Gay Purge. We remember every little thing that the person we put on ignore said to us one night. We forget, though, what is right in front of us. We have a place where we can all get together and exchange information. A voice, singular and collective. We may not have political power or billions of dollars to influence Washington, but we do have a voice. And we must continue to use it. I am utterly convinced that someone, somewhere listens to what we have to say. Whether or not it's a White House aide on lunch break or a young kid in West Virginia who until now didn't think there were other people out there who felt about boys the way he felt about them. LGBTers who were happy and loving and kind and not Republican-offered negative stereotypes.

In the end, this is the only thing that has kept me coming back--except perhaps for Top Ten Conservative Idiots, paging Skinner!! Regardless of the fights and the hurt feelings, DU is in and of itself a liberating and educating weapon against the ploys of the right. Knowledge is power and DU is chock full of knowledgeable people. Be them gay, straight, Black, White, male, female, young, old, or whatever you may be, each and every person adds to our voice and makes us stronger.

It is said that there are at most "six degrees of separation" between any two individuals. Well, DU has had over 150,000 users register. Just think about how many connections we've made over the years--the power and influence that we can wield!

So my point on this, my ten billionth post, is to say to everyone... Together we are strong! We're all in this together and only together do we have the power to challenge the deep pockets of the GOP!

Yours,
Fearless
